Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included; The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and by staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Information from any visits we have made to the service. What has this told us about the service? The care home sent their AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA was clear and detailed giving us all the information required. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. Equality and diversity are recognised, the persons supported are able to follow their personal beliefs and individuality is encouraged and respected. Any new person is assessed to ensure that their needs can be met by the home. Comments from the people supported when asked what the home does well included: Its clean and the staff are good to me. The food and entertainment. Staff comments included: It is very organised and the staff are trustworthy. The service users I believe are very content and happy and we have all made friends. Provides a good atmosphere and treats the service users with respect, dignity and choice. The service users have plenty of activities and are cared for at a high standard. The manager is an excellent role model and friendly and motivates staff to provide a high level of care. The training is excellent and provides me with a lot of in depth knowledge to help support the service users better. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 I wouldnt want to work at any other care home with another team as I think we do a fantastic job. Forums are held for people living in the home and their families every six weeks to provide an opportunity for discussion and to raise any concerns. Each person cared for is listened to and a life mapping exercise is carried out for each individual. This includes their life history and a person centered care plan is produced. Individual choice is taken into account in all areas of daily living. This includes meals, meal times, time of retiring to bed and getting up in the morning. Monthly reviews are undertaken with the person concerned and their familes. The people cared for are provided with the opportunity to interview candidates as part of the recruitment process when staff vacancies arise. An activities co-ordinator plans suitable activities according to the wishes and capabilities of the individual concerned. Activities include, gardening, bowls, bingo, exercise classes, walks, excursions either daily or weekly and arts and crafts. Encouragement and support is provided for the people living at the home to participate in the wider community such as the local churches and the manager has recently enabled a person to attend a physical disability club. A memory room has been created and pictorial signs are now in place on doors such as the toilets. A raised flower bed has been created and a pets corner. The garden is secure and easily accessible with a wild flower corner, water feature and a gazebo. Decoration continues throughout the home and the manager has purchased, new armchairs, new equipment to help people stand up and digital boxes for the Televisions. Staff are encouraged to attend training and senior staff have all received training in the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty. These are legal requirements designed to ensure that human rights are protected for any person who lacks the capacity to make decisions for themselves. The assessment process has been altered in order that the mental capacity of any new person entering the home is assessed and acted upon as necessary. There are currently 24 care staff and 17 have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care at level 2 or above; the NVQ in Care is a nationally agreed qualification necessary for the caring services. The manager has recently completed NVQ 5 in Care and Management and has been appointed care ambassador for Lancashire and is participating in many outside groups such as end of life strategy group. Staff are supervised one to one every six weeks and have annual appraisals. Staff meetings take place every six weeks at different times of day to ensure all staff can attend. There have been no formal complaints raised with the home since the last key Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 inspection and there have been no complaints to the Care Quality Commission. The manager continues to look at ways that the service provided can be improved and effectively runs the home in the best interests of the people being cared for and staff. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
