What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Thorley House Care Home included the following: The annual quality assurance assessment document (AQAA) was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment document and a dataset that is filled in once a year by all providers and is one of the main ways we get information from providers about how they are meeting outcomes for people using their service. The AQAA also provides us with statistical information about the service, trends and patterns in social care. Surveys of users of the service and staff. A review of what the service has told us about since the last key inspection. A review of the findings of the last unannounced key inspection. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was completed promptly and to a good standard. It could give examples of changed practices as a result of obtaining the views of people living in the home. It could also demonstrate that the home has full appropriate admission procedures, including full information on proposed users to prepare the work. The AQAA stated the resident is the centre of all we do and care is person led. It gave examples of this through the use of care plans, a key worker role and appropriate medication practices, including a pharmacy audit. The document stated that there were two activities coordinators in post and that activities have been reviewed in consultation with people living in the home and that more one to one activities are now provided. The AQAA commits the home to a good standard of meals based on a varied and nourishing diet. The AQAA stated that the home has a full complaints procedure as well as safeguarding policies in which all staff have been trained. It showed that complaints are dealt with seriously so that people living there can have confidence in the procedure. The AQAA confirmed that the environment remains of a good standard with regular health and safety audits to ensure the safety of people in the building. The document revealed that the home employs extra staff when necessary and that there are full staffing policies in place including staff meetings, inductions and a full training plan to support staff. It emphasised the level of vocational qualification that employees have and stated that there is full supervision of staff for their support and direction. As a result staff turnover is low. The AQAA stated that the home manager and home services manager are supernumerary to the rota. It also stated that there are full management procedures in place, including a business plan and audited budgets to ensure that the business is conducted effectively. The AQAA stated that there has been neither a complaint nor a safeguarding issue over the last twelve Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 months to confirm a safe service. There were relatively few surveys returned but those that were were complimentary about the home. Two comments received were they listen to me, organise my medicines and keep it clean and our home has a great reputation in the community because we give a high standard of care. A review of the evidence since the last key inspection has found very little that has been notified to us. There was one instance of medication error but other notifications were routine and gave no concern. There has been no need to visit this home as result of information received. A review of the findings of the last key inspection held on 29th January 2009 confirmed that this home was rated as a 3 star, excellent service. Of the seven outcomes groups five were assessed as good and two as excellent. There were no requirements or recommendations resulting from the inspection. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The annual service review has shown that the home continues to provide an excellent service to its users. There have been no issues highlighted as a result of this process. The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required. We can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
