Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? This Annual Service Review took place on 11th December 2009. We last undertook an inspection of this service on 28th November 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We also sent out surveys to some of the people who used this service. Information was also looked at about how the service has managed any complaints. The service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report also gave us some information on how this service was progressing. What has this told us about the service? We were sent an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) by the service that told us about how the service was progressing and what changes had been made to improve the service for the people who live there. There have been several training events for the care staff including instruction in safeguarding vulnerable people, Fire Awareness, Risk Assessment and Moving and Handling. Training continues for the care staff in Dementia Awareness, a distance learning process accredited by Sterling University. Appropriate and regular training helps to ensure that the care staff have the knowledge, skills and ability to undertake their roles successfully. All new carers go through an induction process prior to starting work. Most of the care staff have a nationally recognised qualification in care (National Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3). Further training is planned for the management team and care staff with regard to the Mental Capacity Act, and associated Deprivation of Liberty training. This is important because such training helps to ensure that the people who use the service remain safe. In general, the care planning system has been improved and updated to reflect a more person- centered approach. There are regular meetings with residents and their families/ advocates as part of the care planning process and reviews take place monthly. A getting to know you section is included that records social interests, hobbies and a family history. This information helps people to settle in quickly, and the care staff are more able to develop their social needs. We were told, via the AQAA that the service has a regular programme of activity for all residents. Professional entertainers visit the home frequently. Arts and crafts sessions are held and music and movement is popular, to help joints and mobility. Specialist activities are provided for those who have dementia. One of the care staff is attending a six month extended training event regarding implementing successful activity programmes for the people who use the service. This Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 will help to ensure that activities remain appropriate and regular, to the benefit of the residents. Wherever possible a choice of room is offered and residents are encouraged to make their rooms as homely as possible. The home is divided into four units. One unit caters for 12 mainstream and high dependency residents. Two units provide dementia care for 22 service users. One unit is a rehabilitation unit for 10 people. We received three surveys back that were sent out to residents by the Care Quality Commission. All three were positive and complementary regarding the service that was received. One person told us that she was very pleased with the service that was offered. No complaints have been made about the service since our last inspection activity. We have found that the manager deals with complaints properly and professionally under the homes complaints procedure. Overall, we find this service continues to develop, and positive outcomes are provided for the people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor any information we receive about this service. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
