What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned by to us by four people living at the home. Surveys returned to us by one relative of a resident living at the home. Surveys returned to us by two members of staff working at the home. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service to the people who live there. People living at the home have told us that they are happy living there and are well cared for by a caring, supportive and kind staff team. This means that residents are comfortable and relaxed living at the home that helps to ensure that they experience as good a quality of life as possible. One resident told us that the home has a friendly and homely atmosphere. Another person said that there was a nice homely atmosphere. Comments from the relative that completed the survey were equally positive. This person said that the Tregothnan Care Home looked after old people very well and that there was nothing that the service could do better. Comments from staff confirmed that they felt well supported by the registered manager and that they always received sufficient information about people living at the home in order to ensure that a high quality service was provided. Staff also told us that they received appropriate training so that they understood the needs and requirements of each person living at the home and that communication systems and information sharing between staff was good. One member of staff told us that residents received Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 very good care and a second member of staff endorsed this by saying that there was good team work, residents always came first and that the Tregothnan was very well run and very homely and caring. The AQAA told us that in the last twelve months some internal and external decorating has taken place, some new carpets have been provided and that menus have been changed and improved with the involvement of residents. This shows that residents views are considered important and valued in order to make positive changes. The AQAA also told us that there are now increased staffing levels so that more one to one time can be spent with residents and that because of the digital switchover, there has been some alteration to the television aerials and a number of new digital boxes have been purchased so that residents can continue to watch their favourite television programmes. We were also told that a policy and procedures regarding Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards has been developed and the registered manager is currently trying to secure some external training regarding this matter. It is proposed that this training will then be cascaded to the entire staff team. This important training will help to equip staff with the understanding and knowledge to be more confident about Deprivation of Liberty issues in order that residents are protected. The AQAA showed that in the last twelve months two complaints had been received. One of these was thoroughly investigated using the homes complaint procedure, the complaint was unfounded. The second complaint was responded to using a multi agency approach. This issue is now almost concluded. An inspection visit took place in November 2009. This focused on some elements of the service that related to the second complaint and was not a full key inspection. The registered manager confirmed in writing that certain improvements, mainly relating to parts of the environment at the home had been made following the visit and the Care Quality Commission is satisfied with the outcome. The registered manager at the Tregothnan Care Home continues to let us know about anything that affects the health or welfare of people living at the home. The notifications show us that the registered manager manages issues well. We looked at the information in the AQAA and other information we have received over the last twelve months and our judgement is that the home is still providing a very good service for the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor the service. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
