What the care home does well The ambiance of this home is very warm, relaxed and welcoming and has a homely comfortable feel. When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. A group of people were flower arranging fresh flowers that were later placed around the home. Several people gathered on the veranda before lunch in the nicely laid out dining room. A positive lifestyle for people at this home is promoted and achieved. Feedback from peoplewho use the service is very positive with several people saying that the home does very well with `activities, trips and entertainment`. Uvedale Hall had been rated as an excellent service by us on 19th June 2007. Following the gathering of evidence and this random inspection we believe this still to be the case. The outcomes and experiences people have of this service are extremely good. What the care home could do better: We gave detailed feedback to the manager that more development could be done to link care planning to the every day good work care staff do. That care plans should be more person centred. We did find care planning was managed well with individual focus, but this could be developed further, especially with more complex situations. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: The registered manager of Uvedale Hall had sent us a completed AQQA (Annual Quality Assurance Assessment) on time and giving us some very good information about the service. We received 17 completed surveys from people who use the service or are involved professionally. The response was overwhelmingly positive with comments such as Uvedale does activities particularly well. They encourage act of worship on a regular basis They care for relatives. They do everything well. We have received regular notification of significant events from the manager of this service. At this inspection we followed themes through from notifications and comments from surveys. We found that any matters raised in the surveys were known about by management and had been dealt with and appropriate action taken. We looked at care plans for three people and found these were in a new format. There had been good pre-admission assessments completed on people. Relevant care plans with resident input had been developed and were seen to be up to date. There were additional strategies in place around falls prevention, monitoring and action plans. There were assessments on nutrition, manual handling and mobility that gave staff clear guidance and how they should support people safely to meet their needs. We examined the medication systems currently in place and found a very good system that ensured people safely received the medication prescribed for them. There were good quality auditing systems in place to ensure that if errors were made then these would be quickly identified and rectified. The manager explained that currently the level of need and care input for all residents is moderate, but in the recent past the levels of care had increased. In order to allow more care staff time and one to one with residents the manager had employed more housekeeping/waiting staff. These staff did tasks such as breakfast tray deliver, tea and coffee rounds and replenishing water carafes. This then allowed care staff more time for personal and one to one support where needed. We also followed up with the manager the conclusions to the one complaint and one safeguarding referral that had been made. We found that these had been appropriately dealt with and that systems are in place to listen to and protect people who use this service.
