Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We sent a self assessment form, known as an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA), for the manager of Westvale House to complete. This provided her with the opportunity to explain the areas the home are doing well in, how they have improved in the past year and the plans they have for future improvements. We also asked for information on where the manager feels the home could do better. In addition the form requests information about staff, safety checks and policies and procedures. We looked at any other information we have received about Westvale House since our last big inspection there in February 2009. This includes any reports they have made to us as well as any contact regarding the home that other people may have made. We reviewed the last inspection report for the home, along with all of the information above. This gave us a picture of how the home has operated in the twelve months leading up to this report. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA told us that the home gains the views of people living there by holding regular meetings with residents and relatives where people can exchange their views. The manager said that she has an open door policy and visits residents each day so that they can discuss any issues with her. Questionnaires are sent out to residents and their relatives by the company and further forms can be completed in the home. Care plans are up dated with the input of residents and relatives by the named nurses. All complaints and concerns are acted upon quickly and actions recorded. The AQAA told that the home has improved over the last twelve months after listening to the people who live there by improving the menus and the changing the main meal of the day to the evening, which has been a success. The home now has protected mealtimes which allows all staff to be available to assist people who need help with their meal. The home has a sensory garden and is to provide a vegetable garden with raised beds to allow residents to take part in gardening. Some care staff have been trained to give foot relaxation therapy and more staff will undertake training in the coming months. The AQAA states, We are currently working with a multi disciplinary team as a pilot group in Warrington towards the National Gold Standards Framework Accreditation. We have through training knowledge and experience developed a very good relationship with all visiting GPs regarding the issuing of end of lifemedications. Now residents approaching the end of life can be identified quickly and with the required medication in place any distressing symptoms can be quickly treated. This eases stress and Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 anxiety to a concerned and assists in maintaining dignity at this distressing time of life. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required. We can carry out an inspection at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of a service or the safety of the people using it.
