What the care home does well A service user said I love it here, it is like being on holiday. A relative said the staff are all very nice, very good. The call bells get answered quicker than they use to.A staff member said that staffing has been increased but we could always do with more staff to get people out more. What the care home could do better: The manager has plans to improve the service and they continue to work to their action plan to meet the requirements made at the last inspection. More work is needed to ensure that care plans are individual and person centred. For example the plan we sampled had no mention of the persons life history and background, this section was blank. This means that staff may not know this information and so may not have a full picture of the person. A senior staff said they are working through the care plans to address this. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found:
We carried out a random inspection of the service. This means that we made a short focused visit to the home focusing on one or more standards. We looked at the areas relating to the requirements made at the last inspection of 10/02/2010. These requirements relate to staff training, staffing levels, staff supervision, training and induction records and how the service is monitored. Following the last key inspection we made five requirements and sent the provider a warning letter about meeting these and previous requirements. We received a response with an improvement plan from the provider. We looked at care planning and how the home is being managed. We spoke to staff, service users, a relative and the manager. We sampled records and had a look at some areas of the home. There is a new manager at the home who has been in post for about three months. This follows a period of inconsistent management. The manager has several years experience and has the skills and qualifications needed to manage the service. The manager has identified what needs to improve and has plans to improve the service. The manager said she is committed to investing in and developing the staff. The manager is meeting with each member of staff on a one to one basis to look at what training and support staff need. Most of the staff have now attended first aid training and other training including care planning has been arranged. There are now clear up to date records of training and induction. Staffing levels have been reviewed. Some new staff have been recruited and the staffing levels have been increased. A relative said that they feel there are enough staff on duty and that they have noticed call bells now get answered more quickly. Care plans have started to be reviewed and updated where necessary. The manager said that staff have had training in developing care plans to make them more person centred. The manager agreed that the work on care plans is ongoing. Guidelines about how people should be moved safely have been improved. This means that staff have the information they need about moving people safely. The manager and provider have established systems to audit and monitor practice. Staff said that they have responsibility for checking records daily including medication administration records. The manager is developing the quality assurance system to ensure that service users views are sought and acted on. We will not be taking further action at this time as the provider is working towards meeting previous requirements. What the care home does well:
