One inspector visited the home on 15/04/2010 following two concerns expressed about the home. One was by the relative of a person who had previously been cared for there after leaving hospital. The person concerned had improved in the home sufficiently to be reassessed as no longer needing nursing care and had moved to a residential home. We (Care Quality Commission) were assisted by the manager Barbara Kinzett who made all documentation available to us. We reviewed documentation, spoke to people who lived in the home and met with two members of staff. On arrival the home was warm, quiet and welcoming. We were interested in the organisation of care staff at night and looked at the duty rota. We could see that there is a regular team of trained nurses responsible for managing care staff at night. There have been no previous complaints about night care in the home. . We spoke to 10 people living in the home. We asked them if they were well cared for particularly at night. They said they were and that staff came promptly and were kind to them. We saw records of night care that were detailed and clear showing regular attendance according to peoples needs. We reviewed an incident that indicated all staff may not be fully aware of their responsibilities regarding a persons wishes for care at the end of life. We were given information that made it clear that the nurse had made every effort to ensure peoples views were respected. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The home is currently finalising the implementation of the Gold Standards Framework which aims to ensure that all people in the home have a plan in place for the care that they wish to receive at the end of their lives and avoid any possible confusion. Meetings have been held with relatives and it is anticipated that the framework will be fully implemented in the next two months.
