This Random Inspection was initiated, following concerns that were received by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) about the use of Bedrails at the home. The inspection was carried out on the 6th May 2010. The registered manager was available throughout the visit. We looked at the bedrooms where bedrails were being used. We observed that 9 of the service users beds had bedrails fitted. At the time of inspection visit all of the bedrails appeared to be well maintained, secure and safe. We looked at the files of the 9 people who were using bedrails. It was evident that the individual care plans contained insufficient information regarding the use of bedrails. For example, one persons file had no evidence of a bedrail assessment being carried out. Five other care plans had general risk assessments, but did not contain separate bedrail risk assessments. It was also evident that reviews regarding bedrails were infrequent. We found that, although regulation 26 monitoring visits were being carried out by the area manager, the reports should be more regular (monthly) and include more detailed information. We also discovered that Regulation 37 Notifications were not always completed. These notifications are legal requirements, when the provider must inform the Care Quality Commission (CQC) of any deaths in the home or any incidents / accidents that involve a service user. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
Ensure that thorough and detailed bedrail assessments are completed before, a person goes to live at Mayfield Nursing Home. This is necessary to clearly identify that the persons needs can be provided for. The bedrail risk assessments should be individualised and separate assessment documents and not be included in the general risk assessment section of the care plan. Reviews of bedrail risk assessments should be regularly carried out. This will help ensure that peoples assessed needs are monitored and any changes quickly identified. The CQC must be kept informed of all notifications that are identified in Regulation 37 of the Care Standards Act for Older People. This is needed to ensure that accurate, up to
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 10 date, and relevant records are maintained. Monthly and more detailed Regulation 26 providers monitoring visit reports to be actioned. This will help give the assurance that the provider is much more aware of the day to day running in the home.
