What the care home does well

Both resident`s living at this home are well looked after. They live in a normal family environment as members of the family and are involved in decision making about the running of the home and their own lifestyle. Both residents said they liked living at the home and confirmed they had regular contact with their own families. One resident said, "I am very happy living at the home. We all get on very well and there is always plenty going on. This week we are working in a charity shop to raise money for children living in South America.". Both residents attend a day centre three days a week and said this was something they enjoyed. Both resident`s were able to describe how decisions are made about family holidays and their involvement in these. One resident informed the Inspector there were plans for a holiday to be organised in Whitby. Both residents said they enjoyed the food provided by the home.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The owner of the home has made sure all records are stored safely and these were available for inspection.

What the care home could do better:

Care plan information about both residents was available but this was informal and needs to be more structured. The care plan should be kept under review and updated to reflect any changes in residents needs.

The two residents living at the home when this inspection took place have lived with the owner for over 20 years. The home is run as a normal domestic household. Both residents participate in all normal family activities. Both residents have their own individual rooms with evidence of personal hobbies and interests in the personalisation of their rooms. This inspection was unannounced and took place over two hours. The inspector spoke to the owner and both resident’s living at the home. A full tour of the premises was undertaken with one resident. Service users know their assessed and changing needs and personal goals are reflected in their individual Plan. Service users make decisions about their lives with assistance as needed. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. The Commission considers Standards 6, 7 and 9 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): Residents are supported to pursue an independent lifestyle with identified risks monitored and reviewed. EVIDENCE: The daily records clearly described the level of support and assistance being provided to one resident with his decision-making. The resident informed the Inspector they had recently been involved in a local charity walk for Alzheimer’s disease and had volunteered to be a steward. The resident was able to describe their level of involvement in planning the day and was very excited about this. The resident said, “I had a list explaining what I was expected to do and what I should do if any emergencies happened. Service users have opportunities for personal development. Service users are able to take part in age, peer and culturally appropriate activities. Service users are part of the local community. Service users engage in appropriate leisure activities. Service users have appropriate personal, family and sexual relationships. Service users’ rights are respected and responsibilities recognised in their daily lives. Service users are offered a healthy diet and enjoy their meals and mealtimes. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 15 and 16 Visiting arrangements at the home are informal and family and friends of residents are encouraged to maintain contact ensuring personal relationships are maintained. Routines within the home are flexible and are arranged to ensure residents are respected. EVIDENCE: Both residents said they were happy with arrangements in place for receiving their visitors and were encouraged by the owner of the home to maintain contact with their family and friends. One resident said, “I see my family and friends all the time. I have just attended my brothers wedding and had a brilliant time”. Daily records confirmed the owner of the home was recording contact between the residents and their family and friends”. Both residents said they were happy with the routines within the home and these were being arranged around their individual and collective needs. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18 and 20 Promotion of health is taken seriously and personal support is provided in a flexible and sensitive manner. EVIDENCE: Both residents said they were happy with the level of support they receive within their daily routines and could make their own decision when to bath, retire to bed and get up in the morning. At the time of this inspection one resident had a health problem, which had been identified by the homes owner and appropriate action was being taken to resolve the problem. The resident was able to describe theri healthcare needs to the Inspector and said they had recently seen an appropriate specialist about their condition and had an appointment for a follow up visit later in the year. 20 Burlington Road DS0000010059.V252003.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 12 Concerns, Complaints and Protection The intended outcomes for Standards 22 – 23 are: 22. 23. Service users feel their views are listened to and acted on. Service users are protected from abuse, neglect and self-harm. The Commission considers Standards 22, and 23 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 22 and 23 Arrangements for complaints are handled well and taken seriously ensuring the resident feels listened to. Procedures for dealing with and reporting abuse were satisfactory ensuring people are adequately protected. EVIDENCE: The home has a detailed complaints procedure, which has been made available to the residents. Both residents informed the Inspector they were happy living at the home and had never had cause to make a formal complaint. Service users live in a homely, comfortable and safe environment. Service users’ bedrooms suit their needs and lifestyles. Service users’ bedrooms promote their independence. Service users’ toilets and bathrooms provide sufficient privacy and meet their individual needs. Shared spaces complement and supplement service users’ individual rooms. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 24, and 30 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 30 The home has a planned maintenance and renewal programme for the redecoration and refurbishment of the home to ensure the resident lives in a comfortable, homely and safe environment. EVIDENCE: Both resident’s bedrooms have been decorated and personalised to their own choice. One resident who is keen football fan had posters and bedding of his favourite football team. Both residents had their own TV and music systems and said they enjoyed spending time in their own rooms. The lounge and dining areas have been decorated and furnished for the comfort of residents. The home also has a games room with fruit machines and football game. Both resident’s said they enjoyed the games room. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 37,39 and 42 The home is well managed and run in the best interests of the residents. EVIDENCE: As discussed previously in this report both residents have lived with the owner of the home for over twenty years and live as members of the family. The home is run as a normal family household and quality assurance systems are in place but are informal. Discussion with both residents confirmed they are involved in normal family decision-making and their views are listened to. One resident was able to describe how decisions are made about family holidays and his involvement in these. Significant events confirming both residents are encouraged to pursue leisure and educational interests and make their own decisions about their lifestyle had been recorded. The home is well maintained and procedures are in place to ensure the safety and welfare of both residents is promoted and they are protected.
