Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
This was a random unannounced inspection of Ashton View Care Home following two complaints and two safeguarding issues referred to us. The main concern was in relation to the staffing levels within the home which were thought to be insufficient to meet the needs of people living there. This inspection was conducted by two inspectors. The premises were inspected and interviews were held with the registered manager, nursing and care staff and people living in the home. One relative who was visiting the home was also interviewed. A selection of files for people living in the home were seen and a small selection of staff files were also examined. The home consists of three units and in two of the three staffing levels were satisfactory for the people accommodated there. However on the unit accommodating users with dementia this was not the case and significant shortfalls were found on this unit. Users and the family member interviewed were happy with the standard of care they received. The premises were of a variable standard and some redecoration is required in the dementia unit. Staff opinions varied but, overall, they were positive about the home. There was some deficit in moving and handling training which must be rectified for the safety of staff and users. On one unit, the administration of medicines was taking a great deal of time which was keeping the nurse from other duties.
