Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: The reason for this visit was to carry out a pharmacist inspection in response to a series of reported medication errors. The visit lasted for one and a quarter hours and involved reviewing the ordering and storage arrangements for medication, examining the current medication administration charts (MARs) and checking selected care file entries. We gave verbal feedback to the manager throughout the visit. The home has good systems in place for ordering, receiving and storing medication which means that sufficient doses of the correct medicines should always be available to be given as and when needed. The home should consider checking the regular monthly prescriptions to make sure all medicines requested have been correctly prescribed before a supply is made. Examination of the MARs showed no gaps in the records which means that people living in the home can expect to receive their prescribed medicines correctly. There are good systems in place for giving over the counter medicines when requested and these systems have been agreed with a relevant healthcare professional. Peoples own preferences about where and when to take their medicines are understood and respected. Those people who wish to look after and take their medicines themselves are supported in a safe way in doing so. The manager appears to have responded appropriately to the medication errors reported previously. Subsequent checks and actions have reduced the error rate but we shall continue to monitor the situation closely.
