It is near to Knutsford Town Centre, where there are a wide range of shops and other amenities. The fees at Bexton Court are based on a financial assessment of the individual. Bexton Court provides accommodation on a single floor with some office accommodation sited on a second floor. The premises are physically linked to a ward in the adjoining hospital. Annual Service Review Page 2 of 7 care to a maximum of 23 service users. Bexton Court is an established provision. It is a well-equipped facility offering a range of short- term respite services for people with dementia, which are tailored to an individuals needs. Care can include short breaks, flexible day and overnight care. There is a day care unit, which provides 5 places each day from Monday to Friday. In Bexton Court, all rooms are easily accessible to wheelchair users. There is a secure garden area for service users and visitors to use. What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have, or asked for, since the last key inspection of Bexton Court on 10 September 2007. This included The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people who use the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys sent out to people who use the service and staff members to find out their views about Bexton Court. Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. What Bexton Court has told us about things that have happened at the service; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection which was carried out at Bexton Court on 10 September 2007 and the annual service review which was done on 17 September 2008. Relevant information we have received from other organisations. What other people have told us about Bexton Court. What has this told us about the service? Bexton Court sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was well documented and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing an excellent service and it continues to maintain and improve the service for people who use it. Bexton Court has received one complaint during the last year, which was resolved within 28 days by the service. The commission had not received any complaints about Bexton Court during the last year. No safeguarding referrals have been made by the service over the last year. People who use the service said, They are great with people who are elderly and sick. They give help at all times, Bexton Court gives an excellent service and the staff are always pleasant and helpful, The staff are professional, caring and attentive. They have good awareness of the needs of clients with dementia and are supportive to carers. Bexton Court is an excellent specialist facility. The fact that it is roomy, on the ground floor with access to a secure garden is very calming for residents who can become agitated, Everything I need when attending Bexton Court is done very well, They make everyone feel welcome and cared for. They talk to me like an adult not a Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 child, They look after me well. Good cooking and they always make me feel welcome and My impression of Bexton Court is very good, it is a clean and cheerful place and the care appears to be excellent. Staff said, I have been working at Bexton Court since 2 October and I wanted you to know just how much I have enjoyed my placement here. Every member of staff that I have met has been generous in their time and more than positive in their attitudes. When one takes into consideration the continual work pressures that the staff at Bexton Court encounter on a daily basis this attitude is even more impressive. It has been a pleasure to work here and I have enjoyed the privilege of hopefully making a small contribution to the teamwork at Bexton. The residents at Bexton are truly well looked after and this is undoubtedly due to the brilliant work done by every member of the Bexton Court team, Provides a homely and caring atmosphere for adult users, Provides a safe and sociable environment for people living with dementia. A dedicated trained team ensure clients are treated with dignity and respect and every effort is made to make their stay an enjoyable experience. Personalisation and encouragement to promote and retain independence is the overall goal. Bexton Court has an excellent reputation and continue to live up to this and We support our clients and their families well. Other comments included People are really well cared for and treated with respect and dignity. They are monitored on a personal basis and all their needs are catered for as far as possible, Excellent, caring and professional care for people with dementia. I am proud to work at Bexton Court, Always a smile from staff. Expert in caring for service users living with dementia and We provide outstanding care for up to 23 people on a daily basis and 10 day care people. Bexton is a wonderful environment and as dedicated staff we all just get on with our jobs. The families trust in us to look after their family members. Areas where staff thought improvements could be made included having more opportunity for clients to go out with supervision, having more day trips for clients, and to have more staff on when have clients with dementia who are difficult to care for stay at the home. They told us, we are very often short of staff, we need incontinence products collected more frequently, we need to have property sheets for people as they cannot remember what they brought with them and we need more staff over the night as we cannot get a proper break. The manager made the following comments in the AQAA: Listening to people who use the service we have made recent improvements which include: when carrying out an assessment for a future client we now take the service user guide and information folder and try to ensure that a visit to Bexton Court is planned before the stay. We now carry most of the assessments within Bexton Court. Our menu has changed to offer more variety. Prospective clients are encouraged to come and join us for the day to see how they settle. Staff are being encouraged to take up training days that specialise in dementia. Staff have completed the induction course that is linked to the NVQ level 2. We now have developed our garden into a sensory garden and it is beginning to take real shape. We have had secure gates built at the side of the conservatory and the clients can now walk all the way around the garden and are safe at all times. Once a month we hold quality meetings for our care staff and general assistants. The manager also told us in the AQAA that the plans for the next year include:
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We will be working hard to improve links with other professionals including the third sector. We now offer our conference rooms to the Alzheimers Society so we can join them in their meetings. We will be offering this service out to other organisations that are linked to adults and dementia. We did a pilot scheme after securing a bid to have 4 beds for intermediate care for people living with dementia. Our hopes are that we can secure 4 or more permanent intermediate care beds for Bexton. The pathway journal to be well embedded as part of personalisation. Our team will be continually be encouraged to listen to the client and relative to ensure we can offer the best service suited to them. Staff to be encouraged to share any client or relatives concerns with a senior member of the team so that this can be actioned immediately to alleviate any extra stress and worries. We are looking at changing our sanitary bins for personal hygiene and are in the process of working with a contractor to look at modernising the present system to create a more personalised approach. Have 100 percent fully trained staff on their NVQ 2. We also ensure all relevant information is documented in the diary and check the rota and link a care support worker to link in with the admission. We try our utmost to involve the same carer when a review takes place. The agency continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last main inspection there and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They have shown us that their service continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and we will do a key inspection by 10 September 2010.
