What the care home does well

Medicines were stored securely and handled well. This protects residents` health from harm.

What the care home could do better:

The changed layout of the medicine record did not support staff to make records correctly. It is important to make clear, correct medicine records to show that residents are safe, having their medicines to the doctors` directions. Steps were taken to resolve this.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: This inspection was part of a random programme of inspections to see if medicines were being handled safely. The visit took about three hours and involved inspecting residents medicines and medicine records and talking to staff who manage medicines. We found that on the whole medicines were handled well, which helps ensure that residents health and wellbeing is protected. We looked at how medicines were stored and found them to be secure in a locked room and metal trolley. This means they are safe and unauthorised people cannot get to them. The temperature of the secure fridge (used only for medicines) had not been checked recently. There is a form to make records but it had not been used. The manager gave staff a new form and instructed staff to do it. It is important to be sure that the fridge is at the correct temperature so that the medicines in it stay fit to use. There are new laws about the kind of cupboard that is needed to store controlled drugs (those liable to misuse) correctly. The cupboard in use was not suitable now. A replacement was ordered. This ensures that these medicines have the required extra security. We looked at how medicines were handled and recorded. A new form for recording the receipt and giving of medicines had been introduced. The senior care staff said they found it difficult to use. The prompts to remind staff what they had to record were not clear so the records were not completed correctly. This resulted in the form being changed to a much clearer one. The manager said that she would arrange training so that staff would be sure about what to record. This is important as clear, correct medication records show that residents health is protected by being given their medicines correctly and accounting for every dose.
