CSCI found this care home to be providing an Excellent service.

The inspector found no outstanding requirements from the previous inspection report, but made 2 statutory requirements (actions the home must comply with) as a result of this inspection.

What the care home does well

The home was found to be clean, hygenic and free from offensive odours. It is well decorated and furnished and well maintained. The people living in the home were clean and well dressed and appeared to have good relationships with the staff. The staff treated those living in the home with respect.

What the care home could do better:

Assessments of potential residents need to be thorough to ensure that the home can meet the person`s needs. Care plans need to be re-structured to ensure that they are clear and cover all aspects of the person`s needs. The system for managing the personal laundry of those living in the home needs to be reviewed to ensure that they have their own clothing at all times. Staff training records need to be managed in a way that clearly identifies what training staff have undertaken and when, any gaps there are in their training and when staff need to attend refresher sessions.

There are sea views from some windows. Briarcroft is registered to care for up to 20 people over the age of 65, who may have dementia. There are keypad locks on the main entrances, and an attractive level decked area in a garden that is secure. Accommodation is on two floors with a passenger lift to the first floor. There is a spacious lounge, separate dining area and a sun lounge. All but one room is for single occupation. There is a separate self contained flat on the lower ground floor. The flat has two bedrooms, a lounge and dining area as well as its own kitchen and conservatory. The Home owners will provide a copy of their inspection report to any serious enquirer who does not have access to the web site. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: This was an unannounced inspection carried out in response to some concerns expressed by visitors to the home that the standard of care had declined since the care manager had left several months before. On the day of the inspection it was discovered that the care manager had been re-employed in her previous role and had commenced work the day before. Both the registered provider and staff spoken to said that they were pleased that she had returned and were confident that care would start to improve. The assessment process was discussed with the care manager. She stated that they have a first contact form which they complete with the persons details and a brief history. When the person has been referred by social services they have a care plan provided by the social worker. However, on examining the records for a person recently admitted to the home the information obtained by the home and that provided by social services was sparse. This potentially places the person at risk because the care plan the home devises, detailing the care the staff are required to provide, is based on the assessment. Other records seen were variable in the quality and quantity of infrmation provided. The assessment is particularly important when the person concerned is unable to provide information themselves. The care manager agreed that more attention needs to be paid to information gathering about any potential resident. The care plans for four people living in the home were examined including those for some of the most recent admissions to the home. The care plans, which should detail the care required by the person concerned, were found to be variable in quality. Some were clear about what the staff should do to assist the person while others were not. The care manager agreed that the care plans needed to be re-structured to make them clearer and to ensure that they were fully completed. The care plans also need to be signed and dated by the person writing them and by the person they concern or their representative to ensure that their views have been taken into consideration. Care plan reviews also need to show when they took place, who was involved and what, if any, modifications were made. It was found that daily records had not been consistently completed so it was not always possible to see what the person had been doing or how they had been during the day or at night. This needs to be addressed. In discussion with the care manager she agreed that the care plans, daily records and care plan reviews were not adequate. Concerns had been raised by some visitors that their relatives had been found wearing other peoples clothes and they had seen other residents wearing their relatives clothing. This can affect the persons dignity and implies a lack of respect by the staff for the people living in the home. This was discussed with the registered manager/provider who stated that the issue had been raised at staff meetings and she was monitoring the situation. However, during the inspection those living in the home were seen to be clean and well dressed. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 Concerns had been raised by a visitor to the home about the behaviour of some members of staff which resulted in the dignity of a resident being compromised. As a result they also questioned the training staff had been given. This was discussed with the registered manager/provider who stated that the member of staff mainly at fault had been asked to leave the home. The other staff had been reminded of the appropriate way to approach caring for people and had been told that any other behaviour would not be tolerated. She said that there had been a marked improvement in staff attitudes. During the inspection people were seen to be approached with kindness and good humour to which they responded positively. Staff training was discussed with the registered manager/provider who produced the training records she had kept. These showed that staff had had some appropriate training but the records need to be managed in a way that is easy to ascertain who has done what training, what the gaps are and who needs to attend refresher sessions. These must be reviewed at least monthly and updated as necessary and all plans and reviews signed and dated by those concerned. This is to ensure that all those providing care are clear about what they are required to do for each person living in the home and that those living in the home or their representatives are involved in planning and reviewing the care.
