What the care home does well
Residents said that the care they were receiving was good. Residents consistently added comments such as" staff are lovely "and one resident said that the "staff are attentive". Staff spoke to residents in a respectful yet very friendly way and showed empathy, kindness, at times humour and patience when communicating with the residents. The inspectors were very impressed with how the staff interacted with the residents. Residents said that staff tried to help them maintain links in the community and transported them to various local venues and events. Both inspectors viewed the lunchtime experience for the residents as a very positive and pleasant event and felt that the staff of the home had exceeded the required standard. All areas of the home were clean and tidy. No unpleasant odours were noticeable in the home. Residents said that they met regularly with the manager and spoke positively about her approachability and helpfulness. Staff said the manager was very approachable and helped to coach and supervise them in a friendly way.
What has improved since the last inspection?
There had been an improvement in recruitment practices since the last inspection. Staff said they were encouraged to attend training on various care topics and the frequency of training had increased in recent months. The quality assurance system at the home had improved since the last inspection. Staff were now receiving supervision on a regular basis. There had been improvements in the records kept relating to complaints and resident monies.
What the care home could do better:
All service users must have their needs clearly assessed before admission. A copy of this assessment must be available in the residents care plan so that it can be kept under review. Resident care plans must be reviewed at least every month and must contain all the information required under the Regulations. Medication procedures employed by staff need to be safer. The home must obtain all relevant information and documents before new employees commence work. Carpets identified in the report either need cleaning or replacing. The hot water pipes in the bathrooms need "boxing in" to minimise the risk of injury to residents.
