This inspection was carried out following an Annual Service Review of the home. We received information from people that told us they have concerns about the food, staffing, cleanliness, repairs, management of the home and how complaints are dealt with. Two inspectors visited the home unannounced on 30th July 2009. We spent time talking with people living at the home, their relatives, management and other staff, and looked around the building. We also examined records and served the person in charge with a Code B Notice. This is a procedure that allows inspectors to take or copy any documents relevant to their investigations. We found some standards have deteriorated at the home and told the management what needs to be improved. We will doing another inspection to check that these improvements have been made. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The menus need to be changed to remove meals that are not popular, so people are offered a well balanced diet with a choice of meals they enjoy. The current menus should always be displayed in dining rooms so people know what meals will be served. Complaints about the service must always be investigated so people know their concerns are taken seriously and acted on. There should also be regular meetings for people living at the home and their relatives to give their views on the quality of the service. Repairs to equipment and facilities in the home need to be properly monitored and dealt with promptly, and carpets require deep cleaning. Fire exits are to be kept clear and alarmed to ensure peoples safety. Staffing levels have not been well planned, resulting in lots of use of agency staff and cover by staff from other homes. Rotas need to be planned earlier and clearly recorded to show the names and status of staff and the hours they work at the home. Information on staff files needs to be better organised and recorded so it demonstrates full employment history, details of all training completed including induction specific to
