This random inspection took place over half a day during November 2008. The purpose of our visit was to ensure that the home was maintaining the excellent standard of service achieved at the previous key inspection of the 4th July 2007. During this visit discussions took place with people living at the home as well as with staff and managers of the service. We also examined a random selection of records, policies and procedures and observed the daily activity within the home. We looked at information received previously, such as the annual quality assurance assessment, which is a self assessment of the service that the managers complete every year to tell us how the home is meeting objectives for the people living there and what improvements need to be made. As part of this random inspection we we used case tracking as a means of assessing some of the National Minimum Standards. This process enabled us to focus on the care received by one of the young adults living at Higher Morris Farm. Records relating to that individual were inspected and a discussion took place with them. At the time of our visist to this service the fees ranged from 135, 000 pounds to 172, 000 pounds per year. There were no charges being incurred for additional services provided. What the care home does well:
Higher Morris Farm provides clean, comfortable and well-maintained accommodation for the young adults who live there and a pleasant working environment for the support staff. The home has a thorough and detailed pre-admission process that ensures, as far as possible that the home is able to provide appropriate support to a prospective resident and also, whenever possible, encourages and supports them to make a decision about if they would like to live at Higher Morris Farm. The home has a history of being person centred in its approach and it places an emphasis on the abilities, interests and hobbies of the young adults with the intention of supporting them to enjoy a fullfilling life. The home involves the young adult and their families in the process of deciding how best to provide the necessary support. The plans of care are detailed and they include information about the young adults preferred routines, preferences and lifestyle, but also taking into consideration the safety of the people living at the home. Each young adult living at the home has their own, individualised activity timetable that enables them to follow their own interests and hobbies and to participate in the local community as far as possible. Flexible and extra staffing enables people living at Higher Morris Farm to take part in activities outside the home, but it is also recognised that routine and familiarity were important to them. The home has strong links and good support from the families of the young adults living at Higher Morris Farm and any visitors are made to feel welcome. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 Meals were planned to meet the specific needs of each of the young adults, with dietary requirements, religious needs and individual preferences being taken into consideration. A health care plan is in place for each individual and these outline the steps needing to be taken by staff to ensure their continuing good health. A number of health professionals are involved in providing support to the young adults who use the service so that their health care needs are consistently met. Staff are carefully recruited with all of the necessary checks being undertaken before a new member of staff starts work at the home. The young adults are comfortable and relaxed in the company of staff and the staff themselves speak sensitively to the people living at the home. The staff team have a good mix of skills having attended a range of appropriate training courses. The home is well managed, providing a safe and suitable service for the young adults living at Higher Morris Farm. The home also receives good support and guidance from the senior management team, who visit the home regularly. There are a number of internal quality assurance audits conducted to ensure that the home is run safely and that a good service is provided. The health, safety and welfare of the young adults and staff are promoted and protected by ensuring that the systems and equipment within the home are safe for use.
