What the care home does well

On the day of the inspection we found that there was a homely and friendly atmosphere, people spoken to said they were happy with their care, got on well with the staff and enjoyed their meals. Staff and residents were observed as interacting well with each other. There is little turnover of staff and as a consequence they know the residents really well and are able to meet the social and personal care needs of the current client group. Hillsborough Residential Home is well maintained and equipped. On the day of the inspection the home was clean and hygienic. Ancillary staff including administrative, catering and domestic staff are employed to support the care staff. Numerous training opportunities are available for the staff group and some of these were seen displayed in the home during the inspection. Certificates for training completed were also seen and included dementia care.

What the care home could do better:

The manager was advised that the care plans could be more detailed to ensure that any staff picking one up would be able to provide care and support to the person as a result of reading it. We found that the information about each person is documented in several different places and felt that this could be streamlined which could then result in people writing more relevant information about a persons day and this could be used for review purposes. Copies of the up to date risk assessments seen in peoples rooms should also be in the main care plans. The concern that resulted in the inspection was discussed and the manager agreed that she did not always document actions she has taken, such as calling a GP, and that this isn`t helpful to her if she is ever asked to produce evidence of her actions. She was also advised that if she talks to a member of staff to advise them of good practice when dealing with a client this should be documented as part of the supervision process or in the staff file as an ad hoc training event.

Support being given to residents and interactions between residents and staff were observed throughout the inspection. It would make managing the care plans easier if they were streamlined and information was stored in one record instead of in number of different places which can make it difficult to follow up on a persons ongoing welfare. The manager should ensure that any phone calls, staff training and ongoing information about residents day to day lives is documented appropriately. 2 31 Care Homes for Older People Page 7 of 8 Reader Information Document Purpose: Author: Audience: Further copies from: Inspection Report Care Quality Commission General Public 0870 240 7535 (telephone order line) Our duty to regulate social care services is set out in the Care Standards Act 2000.
