This inspection was unannounced. The Commission had received an anonymous concern regarding the choice and quality of food provided, the cleanliness of the home and the lack of structured activities for clients who are receiving care on the first floor of the home. The manager explained that she had been absent from the home for a period of time and had not long returned to work. During her absence she believed that the quality and choice of food had diminished. Upon her return a new cook had been employed and the menus revised to include a more traditional home cooked choice of meals. I spoke to some people about the food that was provided, all were satisfied with both the choice and the quality of the meals. The manager also informed me of plans to create a small dining area in another part of the home which would make a more pleasant dining experience for some clients who wished to take their meals in a quieter area. Concerns were raised about the home not providing activities to the people who resided on the upper floor. I spoke with the manager about this who said that everyone was asked if they wanted to partake in the organised activities that were scheduled for the day. She commented that some people on the upper floor were limited to what they could take part in, however the activities organiser did spend time on the upper floor with people carrying out individual activity sessions, this was evidenced in peoples plans of care. Concerns had also been raised with the commission about the cleanliness of the home and the infection control procedures taking place. On the day of the inspection the home was clean and tidy. All communal bathrooms and toilets were clean and peoples bedrooms were vacuumed and tidy. The home smelt clean and fresh. I spoke with a visitor to the home who said she had not noticed any nasty smells and that she was very satisfied with the care her mum was receiving at the home.
