The visit to the home was to look at the areas of medication, incidents and accident recording and management of the home. The medication records and storage were reviewed. The home has recently changed pharmacists and has a monitored dosage system in place. This means that the medicines are pre packed by the chemist to help reduce mistakes being made. Staff tell us that the new Pharmacist is helpful and consistent, they feel that previous problems with medication will be minimised. During the visit the medication administration records were reviewed and found to be completed thoroughly by the staff. Staff told us that they used distinctive codes to show when medication is not administered and why. Drugs returns information was complete and staff confirmed that they had training in the administration of medication. Staff were vigilant in recording details about falls and injuries and care records recorded details about behaviour and incidents. Care plans have good details about how staff should be supporting people who have behavioural needs. This is important to make sure that care needs are safely met. Staff tell us that they feel the home is managed well and that the staff are able to speak freely if they have any concerns. The manager and deputy manager are always available and any concerns or practice issues can be raised promptly. The management of the home responds promptly to any safeguarding concerns. The maintenance of the home is generally good but the home has been without a bath since December 2008. The people living at the home are able to shower but they have not had use of the bath for some time and do not have a choice in how they wish to bathe. The manager and deputy manager support the people who live at the home and the staff well, but there has been a lack of monitoring visits from the responsible individual (or representative). Their responsibility is to provide monthly monitoring visits and produce a report of their findings. This is to make sure that the quality of care is maintained in the service. What the care home does well:
The medication storage was safe and the records for administration and disposal were complete. Clear records are maintained regarding incidents and accidents occurring in the home. The staff ensure that suitable action is taken when an accident occurs. The manager supports the staff well and makes sure that there are regular meetings and supervision for staff. The manager also makes sure all the care records and policies and procedures are well monitored and up to date.
