What the care home does well

There was a homely and relaxed atmosphere apparent with the home. Staff were seen to be interacting in a polite manner with the people who live there. The requirements from the last Key Inspection report were not reviewed during this visit.

What the care home could do better:

A system must be in place to ensure that any complaint made under the complaints procedure is fully investigated. A robust system must be put in place for the recording of people`s personal finances, so that a clear audit trail is available.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We visited Oak Lodge on 25 February 2010 following receipt of some complaints about the service. Two were about the management of the home not responding when complaints had been raised. Another was about the management of personal monies within the home. We initially spoke with the deputy manager as the registered manager was not available. The deputy manager felt that she could not respond to our queries and therefore telephoned for the registered manager to attend. When the manager arrived we discussed with her about the management of complaints. We asked to see the record of complaints made to the home. The recording book could not be located for some time. When we saw the book, the last recorded complaint was from February 2009. However the CQC are aware of at least 2 complaints which have been made to the home since then. Informal complaints are not recorded We then discussed personal finances. We then looked at a snapshot of those monies for 5 people. We found these to be in order in some aspects. When money is spent on behalf of people, two signatures are recorded and receipts are obtained. However when money is received on behalf of people, this is recorded on the sheet and witnessed by two people. However the person handing in the money is not given a receipt. This means that an audit trail is not possible and potentially places people at risk of abuse.
