We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the service and returned to us on 16th April 2009. The AQAA is a selfassessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We also looked at notifications received. These are a legal requirement; the service must tell us about certain things that happen in the service. The report of the previous inspection undertaken on 16th May 2007 was also considered in this review. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. In the completed AQAA, Judith Maidment, the registered manager at Riverside Nursing Home has identified what they feel they do well which gives no cause for concern about the service, which is consistent with the last key inspection undertaken May 2007, which made no requirements of the service. In the AQAA Judith Maidment has identified that improvements in the next 12 months will include a review of all care plan documentation and creation of an indexing system, an audit of social activity and action plan to move social care forward, changes and refurbishment of some of the living space and increase and develop staff training programmes. The data provided with the AQAA tells us about the level of occupancy in the home and an outline of the dependencies of service users, the data also provides information about the staffing levels and competencies. Although some anomalies, a discussion with Judith Maidment clarified these figures. There are 22 full time care staff employed and 4 part time, 15 of these staff members (72 ) have achieved NVQ level 2 or equivalent and the remaining 7 care staff are undertaking the award. There are 6 full time registered nurses and 2 part time. Correspondence and communications held on file relating to reported incidents have been well managed by the service (The Care Homes Regulations (CHR 2001) expect homes to inform the Commission about certain incidents or events in the home, these are called notifications under regulations 37 of the CHR) A review of notifications sent to us shows that they keep us informed of any incidents or events in the home that may affect the well being of residents. In telephone discussion with Judith Maidment it was evident how reported incidents are being investigated and progressed in accordance with statutory guidelines. We have not received any surveys from service users giving their views on the service and care provided although it is evident from the completed AQAA that Riverside Nursing Home uses an internal quality assurance audit using surveys and questionnaires to residents and relatives and regular meetings with residents individually to discuss and review their care progress. Staff meetings and staff supervision are also carried out and used for quality audit purposes. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by May 2010 However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
