At the time of our visit, 14 people were living in the home. It is owned and managed by Mr Beckhurst, who is assisted by another staff member who is known as the Care Manager. The home is registered to accommodate up to 19 people. Two rooms have en-suite facilities. The premises comprise a large, older property that stands in its own grounds, overlooking the picturesque creek of Newton Ferrers. There are a dining room, two lounges and a conservatory. The home has a stair lift to the mezzanine level and ramps to provide access in and out of the building. Those service users with limited mobility are provided with accommodation on the ground and mezzanine floors as there are a few steps remaining to access the first floor. Adjoining the property are two privately owned flats that are not connected to the care home. Immediate requirements: These are immediate requirements that were set on the day we visited this care home. The registered person had to meet these within 48 hours.
No. Standard Regulation Requirement Timescale for action 1 7 13 (4)(c) Each person must 20/01/2009 have individual risk assessments that are regularly reviewed and kept up to date. On this occasion there was no moving and handling assessment for one person. This will protect people from unnecessary risks to their health and welfare. 2 26 16 (j) All people in the home 20/01/2009 must be able to wash and dry their hands following use of the toilet and/or before and after providing personal care. Staff must follow policy for safe disposal of fouled laundry. Soiled commodes must be emptied within a reasonable timescale. So that the liklihood of cross infection is reduced and the home is hygienic and pleasant. 3 38 13 (5) Staff must be trained and 06/02/2009 competent to move people correctly. They must follow a plan of how this is to be done. The m ethod must be in line with current safe practice and with any moving and handling aids, identified as necessary, available to them. Statutory requirements These requirements set out what the registered person must do to meet the Care Standards Act 2000, Care Homes Regulations 2001 and the National Minimum Standards. The registered person(s) must do this within the timescales we have set.
No. Standard Regulation Requirement Timescale for action 1 7 15 Each person must have a plan in place, which describes how staff are to deliver the care they want and need. This plan must be in place regarless of how long the person will be resident at the home. The plan must be regularly reviewed and updated. This will ensure staff have the instructions they need to deliver care properly. 20/01/2009 2 9 13 (2) Medicines must not be secondarily dispensed. They must be administered from their original container. So they are dispensed according to the prescribers instructions. 20/01/2009 3 37 17 (2) All accidents must be accurately and adequately recorded. So there is a record of how they were managed. 20/01/2009 4 38 13 (4) A risk assessment must be produced for any freestanding radiators. Not tested on this occasion. To ensure any risk is understodd and can be reduced or removed. 20/01/2009 Care Homes for Older People Page 8 of 10 5 38 13 (4) Equipment must not be 20/01/2009 left in the corridor where it is an obstruction to the fire exit and fire doors must not be propped open. So that people are protected in the event of a fire. 6 38 13 (4) Cleaning chemicals must 20/01/2009 be securely stored where people, who may be confused, do not have access to them. This will remove hazards associated with these chemicals.
