What the care home does well
The service users spoken with said that they were well cared for by the staff who were friendly and diligent. Service users had been able to visit the home prior to moving in and assessments had been made of their needs. They had access to other health care professionals when necessary and records were kept of their health and social needs. Staff and service users said that there were enough staff on duty and the staff had received a range of training. Over 50% of staff had achieved NVQ Level II qualification in care. Staff and service users expressed their confidence in the management of the home and said the manager and the owners were approachable. The environment was generally well maintained and service users were able to personalise their rooms. The home was clean with no unpleasant odours in any of the areas checked.
What has improved since the last inspection?
There has been ongoing refurbishment throughout the home, although there is still the need to upgrade some of the furniture, as identified in previous reports.
What the care home could do better:
Fire records were generally well maintained but a check of the records showed that the alarms had not been tested on a weekly basis. The owners, or their representative, had made regular visits to the home but had not left a report for every month. The care plans need to be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that the care provided is up-to-date in line with service users` needs. All entries in the care plans need to be signed and dated. Any handwritten entries on the medication record sheets need to be signed and checked by a second staff member. The home needs to have their system checked by the pharmacist who supplies the medication to the home.
