The number of people accommodated must not exceed 19 Date of last inspection 7 December 2004 Brief Description of the Service: St Christophers Residential Home is registered to provide care for up to nineteen older people and is situated in a residential area of Hove. The detached property consists of thirteen single rooms and two double rooms of which six singles and one double have en suite facilities. The home is furnished to a high standard. Communal areas include a large lounge, dining area, quiet room, conservatory and a rear garden. Two stair lifts are available. Residents need to be reasonably mobile, as the home is not suitable for wheelchairs above ground floor level. The home is in close proximity to the seafront, local transport and other amenities. St Christophers is a member of the Brighton & Hove National Care Homes Association and has also received the Investors in People Award. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This Unannounced Inspection took place over a period of five hours on 21st July 2005. The inspection process included speaking with eight residents, informal talks with the staff, document reading, tour of the premises and informal discussions with the proprietor and the manager/proprietor. The intended outcomes for Standards 1 – 6 are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 2 & 5 The home provides residents with contracts. Prospective residents are offered opportunities to visit the home. EVIDENCE: Residents are provided with the homes statement of terms and conditions once they have decided to move into St Christopher’s. Prospective residents are offered a two-week stay to see whether the home can meet their needs. Residents and family members are also invited to visit the home for a meal or stay for a day, depending on their wishes. The home has a relaxed policy regarding trial visits. The intended outcomes for Standards 7 – 11 are: 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 7, 8, 9 & 11 Residents are provided with comprehensive care plans and their health care needs are fully met. Medication is administered appropriately. Resident’s wishes regarding illness and death are recorded. EVIDENCE: The home maintains comprehensive care plans for each resident, which are updated and reviewed on a three-monthly basis or more frequently if required. Reviews of care plans are carried out with the resident and family members. Several random care plans were viewed and these were seen to be up to date and informative. Residents are all registered with their own GP’s and arrangements are in place for residents to have access to district nurses, community practice nurses, chiropodist etc. when required. During the inspection the chiropodist was present and residents were having treatments in a private room off the lounge area. Several residents stated that they were very happy to receive this service in the home. Medication records were checked and medicines are being appropriately administered. None of the current residents self medicate. Staff receive medication training on a regular basis and some staff members have achieved Level 2 certificates in medication administration. Resident’s wishes regarding illness and death have been recorded in their care plans and the home maintains up to date contact

Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 12, 13 & 15 The home employs a part-time activities co-ordinator. Visitors are welcome and are able to visit at most times. The home provides residents with a varied and well balanced diet. EVIDENCE: A part-time activities co-ordinator is employed by the home for two days a week and various car trips, day trips and visits are organised for residents. During the inspection the weekly exercise class was being held and the vast majority of residents were participating. Several residents stated that they enjoyed these classes, as it helped to keep them more mobile. Monthly entertainers also visit the home. Visitors are welcome in the home at most times and several of the current residents go out of the home to visit their local family and relatives. Visitors are also invited to stay for meals during the day if they wish. The home currently employs one permanent part-time cook and one weekend agency cook who provide a varied and well balanced diet for residents. Residents who were spoken to said that they were very happy with the quality of the food that was provided by the home. Residents take their meals together in a communal dining room on the ground floor. EVIDENCE: The home has a comprehensive complaints policy and procedure, which includes a 28 day response time and details of how residents or family members can contact the CSCI. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 20, 21, 24 & 26 Residents are provided with adequate communal space. The home provides sufficient bathing and toilet facilities. Bedrooms are furnished and decorated to a high standard. The home is very clean and tidy. EVIDENCE: The home provides residents with a number of communal areas, which include a large lounge, dining area, quiet room, conservatory, and rear garden all located on the ground floor. The home provides sufficient bathing and toilet facilities. Seven bedrooms have en suite facilities and assisted baths are available in both bathrooms. Bedrooms appeared homely and were furnished and decorated to a high standard. Residents are able to personalise their own rooms by bringing in small pieces of their own furniture and other personal items. The home is well maintained and was found to be very clean and tidy. Service users are supported and protected by the home’s recruitment policy and practices. Staff are trained and competent to do their jobs. The Commission considers Standards 27, 29, and 30 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 28 & 30 Approximately 50 of the staff team now hold National Vocational Training Qualifications (NVQ). The home provides staff with a very good level of training. EVIDENCE: Since the last inspection a further two staff members have commenced there NVQ Level 3 training and to date over half of the staff team hold recognised qualifications. Staff appeared to work well together and provide a caring and friendly environment for residents. Several residents that were spoken to stated that they felt the staff were very caring and friendly towards them. The home currently employs twelve care staff and two ancillary staff. The home continues to provide an excellent level of training and staff are offered three training courses a month. Recent courses staff have attended include first aid, infection control and food hygiene. Service users benefit from the ethos, leadership and management approach of the home. The home is run in the best interests of service users. Service users are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. Service users’ financial interests are safeguarded. Staff are appropriately supervised. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. The Commission considers Standards 33, 35 and 38 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 34, 35 & 37 The home provides suitable accounting and financial procedures. The home does not deal with resident’s finances. The home maintains all the required records. EVIDENCE: The home maintains suitable financial and accounting procedures to ensure its viability. There are no vacancies at present. The home does not deal with the financial affairs of any of the residents as they are carried out by family members or friends. A number of the required records were viewed and they were found to be in order.
