What the care home does well

From our conversations with the home manager and the records that we looked at, we were able to ascertain that `Care of the Dying` training had so far only been arranged for and attended by, the registered nurses who worked during the day. The night time registered nurses, bank staff and a newly appointed registered nurse had not yet completed the training. `Customer Service` training is being arranged via an e-learning programme and the Caring Homes Trainer is monitoring the staff teams completion of the programme. There is ongoing monitoring of staff performance and conduct whilst working with residents. This approach will ensure that people will receive a better service and should be continued. `Cultural Awareness` training has only been arranged for registered nurses. Only those nurses on day duty have received this training. A number of staff have already completed the local hospice 6 week course and there are links with the primary care trust liaison nurses, and the GP. The GP is always involved in advanced care planning and decision making when allowing a natural death is appropriate.

What the care home could do better:

The night time registered nurses, bank staff and a newly appointed registered nurse had not yet completed the `Care of the Dying` training. The home manager needs to ensure that further `Care of the Dying` training is arranged for the remaining registered nurses and also all care staff. This is to ensure that they adhere to their own training plan, that was devised as a result of a safeguarding investigation. The provider has told us that further training is arranged for the 29th September and 4th Ocober 2010. The timescale of 30th September can not be changed because this requirement is made under the Care Standards Act 2000, which ceases to be in force on this date. We expect the provider to ensure that this training is still completed as it will still be relevant under the Health and Social Care Act (2008). There needs to be additional `Cultural Awareness` training arranged for the rest of the staff team so that staff can be better informed about resident`s individual needs. In their targeted training plan Caring Homes said this was to have been achieved by 15 July. The home have failed to achieve the training plan that they set for the staff team, within the timescales they set themselves. There was no evidence that forthcoming planning is arranged either and this is not good enough. The requirements that were issued following the last full inspection have been carried over in to this report . We request that St Georges Care Centre provided us with evidence that the associated regulations are now being met. We also request that new timescales are set and we are notified of these so that we can continue to monitor progress.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited this home to check on the progress being made in respect of a targetted training plan that Caring Homes put in place as a result of an investigation undertaken by their clinical director. This investigation came about because a family who had had a relative in the home had raised serious concerns about the standard of care delivered and the way in which specific care needs had been met. This family had also felt very unsupported. The home manager had previously provided us with a copy of the training plan and had stated that this would be achieved by 1 August 2010. For those readers who require a more detailed and informative report about this care service, then this report should be read alongside the full key inspection report dated 7 April 2010.
