This inspection lasted three hours and the purpose of it was to look at issues identified in information received before the Annual Service Review was completed. The areas looked at include the care and health provision, adequacy of staffing, the heating and medication administration. The inspection involved inspection of individual records and systems for administering medicines, a tour of the building, talking to residents, the manager and staff. Good care planning systems are in place and there was evidence from individual records that peoples care needs are identified and met. Assessment tools are used to identify changing needs and it was possible to confirm that information from these is used in the care plans. There are regular reviews of care plans to ensure that staff are clear about peoples changing needs. Peoples health care needs are identified and recorded within individual plans. Any health care professionals interventions are recorded in detail. The local general practitioner visits the home weekly and the manager says at other times as necessary. There was evidence from one persons records that this is happening. Risk assessments are in place to show how risks are minimised. Medication records were generally in good order, although there were occasional gaps in recording the administration of medicines. These were brought to the managers attention. Hand written entries in the medicine administration records were not signed by two members of staff. A new central heating boiler has been installed within the last few months. The manager said that problems had been experienced with setting the temperature of the boiler when it was first fitted. Staff had turned the temperature down, but forgot to put it up again afterwards. This matter has been resolved and staff are clear that the heating is maintained at an appropriate temperature. All areas of the home were warm and comfortable during this inspection. During the inspection there were sufficient staff on duty to meet the needs of the people living in the home. There was a hand over session held during the inspection and all staff attended this, but were available if a resident needed support. The manager was also available. Staff were available in the public areas of the home during the visit and residents said that there were enough staff to help them when they needed it. The rota showed that sufficient levels of staff are available on each shift. Before this inspection a concern was raised that the manager was related to other members of staff and that this may impact on the service delivered. During the inspection this was discussed with residents and staff and there was no evidence that the managers relationship with one member of staff was impacting on the quality of care. Staff said that they felt well supported and that they had no problems raising any issues with the manager. Residents said that the manager and the staff were approachable and that they felt able to talk to them if they had any concerns. There was no evidence to suggest that the relationship between the manager and one member of staff caused any problems. What the care home does well:
