Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection was carried out on 16 February 2009. At this inspection the service was assessed as having a two star good rating. For this annual service review we looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home did not send us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it and this has delayed the preparation of this report. The AQAA was clear and gave us most of the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and the information we have received from other people and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. Seven people living in the home returned surveys sent out. These surveys provided positive comments about the quality of the service and the staff support. People had been assisted to complete their surveys by staff. One person said The home does meals very well and the bedroom is lovely. Another said the home is kept clean and staff look after us. People living in the home said that there were enough staff. Five relatives returned surveys and very positive comments were made about the quality of care. One person said The quality of care is excellent and staff are very attentive and sensitive to my mothers various needs. Another said First and foremost it is my mothers home. Her wishes and needs are met at an excellent standard. The manager and deputy and staff ensure that residents comfort and needs are the priority. We also received a telephone call from a relative who raised concerns Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 about the quality of care, the heating in the home and the staffing levels. The manager said that the central heating boiler has recently been replaced and there were some initial teething problems that have now been resolved and the heating is currently working well. The AQAA says that staffing levels are maintained at an appropriate level to meet the needs of the people living in the home. We received comments from 7 staff and they showed that staff feel well supported and think that people living in the home receive a high quality service. One person said Small home so all staff and residents are very well known to one another, which makes it a friendly place and staff understand residents needs better. All staff are involved in taking residents out on trips, which they enjoy. It is a warm welcoming place and all the staff get on well, which makes a good working environment. Staff said that there were enough staff working in the home to meet the needs of the residents. The AQAA tells us that good systems are in place for care planning and for updating records as peoples needs change. There are good systems in place for dealing with complaints and the manager knows all the people living in the home well. The AQAA says that no complaints have been made and that policies and procedures have been updated in the past year. No safeguarding referrals have been made. The home tells us that staff have received training in safeguarding and that this is regularly updated. The AQAA tells tells us that the home is well maintained, clean and well furnished. Good standards of health and safety and infection control are maintained. In the past year the home tells us that there have been eleven staff changes. The AQAA tells us that staff are experienced and have good training opportunities. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? As a result of issues raised in this review we intend to carry out a random inspection by 31 December 2009. This inspection could mean that we will bring our next key inspection forward.
