This inspection was carried out on 16th January 2006.

What the care home does well

Service users live in a well-maintained and homely environment, where they can be confident that their views are valued and the home is run in their best interest.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The complaint procedure is now included in the service user`s guide. All staff have annual movement and handling training, and fire lectures and fire drills twice a year. The results of the service user surveys are also published and made available to service users, their representatives and other interested parties.

Can provide accommodation and care for three named service users under the category of DE (dementia). 13th September 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Thorpe House is a privately owned and managed care home registered to provide accommodation and nursing care for up to 21 adults with severe and enduring mental health needs. The establishment, a stone built period residence, is situated on the outskirts of the village of Almondbury, with easy access to the town centre of Huddersfield. The property is set in extensive and well-maintained gardens and grounds. Service users’ private accommodation consists of five double and eleven single bedrooms. Communal areas are spacious and comfortable and furnished and fitted to a good standard. Two inspectors carried out an unannounced inspection at the home on Monday 16th January 2006, the duration of the inspection was 4 hours. The manager, James Lockwood, was present at the inspection. The following methods have been used in the production of this report: examination of a sample of documents including training & fire records, recruitment files, policies and procedures and medication. The majority of core standards were assessed during the announced inspection in September 2005, which left only 2 standards to be assessed, and any recommendations to be followed up from that inspection. The inspectors would like to thank residents, staff and management for their time and hospitality throughout the inspection. What the service does well: What has improved since the last inspection? What they could do better: The home is advised to obtain a copy of “The Royal Pharmaceutical Guidelines”, and the disposal of medicines policy should be updated, to include the revised procedure. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): The standards were not inspected however, the recommendations from the last inspection were EVIDENCE: A variety of meals are offered that take into consideration the food preferences of service users, and any variations to the menu are now recorded. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 20 Service users are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. EVIDENCE: Medication housekeeping is of a good standard. Following a risk assessment and monitoring by staff, service users are able to self-administer their medication if they so wish. The medicines policy was also comprehensive, and Mr Lockwood is aware that the documentation needs to be updated to include the recently changed guidance on the disposal of medicines. A copy of “The Royal Pharmaceutical Guidelines” should also be available in the home.
