The home was first registered as a care home in 1994 to provide care for three adults with a learning disability or mental disorder. Mr & Mrs Hogton have now provided this form of care for 15 years. The providers live on site. The care provided is seen to be a "family setting" with the house and its facilities being for everyone`s use. The house is a modern four bedroom detached property on a very pleasant, small housing estate of similar properties. The home is situated on the outskirts of the village of Horbury with local amenities close by and there is a good transport service to Wakefield Town Centre. There is one large lounge with an additional "family den" in the converted garage. Each service user has their own bedroom accommodation. The home is well furnished with quality fittings and is maintained to a good standard.

What the care home does well Records show the people living in the home have done so for many years and consider it to be theirs. People were observed relaxing in very comfortable an homely surroundings. The Registered Manager/owner confirmed that people are considered to be part of an extended family and participate in the decision making processes in the home. People are encouraged and supported to live as ordinary a lifestyle as possible which includes using ordinary community based health care and leisure services. Records show peoples health care needs are met by local General Practitioners, Dentists and Optician and records confirm people have regular health checks. People are encouraged to be part of their local community and are supported to use local amenities such as shops, supermarkets,post office, public houses and restaurants . Records show people enjoy holidays abroad with an extended holiday to the Canary Islands last year and shorter holidays in Scotland. People appear to have enjoyed their holidays very much and are looking forward to this years holiday. The home does provide its own transport and have a new people carrier, however, people are also supported to use public transport as part of living an ordinary lifestyle and promoting a positive community presence. Since the previous inspection visit their have been improvements to the environment and people now enjoy having a new conservatory and a sit in shower room. The utility room, kitchen and dining room also has a new solid wood floor covering. One person said they enjoy going supermarket shopping and helping with food preparation. People are protected from any kind of abuse as the home uses the Wakefield Local Authority Safeguarding Policy and Procedure for guidance on reporting any allegations of abuse. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment an service history shows the home has not had to make any Safeguarding referrals to the Local Authority. Records show the home has not received any complaints and the service history shows the Care Quality Commission has not received any complaints about the home or the services provided.A tour of the premises found peoples own space is maintained and decorated to a very high standard and people are surrounded by their own possessions. The lifestyle experienced by people living in the home matches there expectations and they have a say in the running of the home and what happens to them. What the care home could do better: The daily records may benefit from more detail to reflect and show events undertaken by people living in the home. This might also provide more evidence of peoples involvement in the decision making processes. During the visit there was the opportunity to meet and speak with three people living in the home, and Mr and Mrs Hogton. The Annual Quality Assurance Assess men was considered along with the service history and a sample of peoples records. A tour of the premises was also undertaken. The inspector would like to take the opportunity to thank those living in the home for their hospitality, patience and cooperation throughout the visit.
