When the person with LD(E) is no longer living at the home, the Category of Registration reverts to LD for 7 persons of either sex. 22nd April 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Westhaven is a home for up to 7 adults who have learning disabilities. The home is owned by Catholic Care. It is located within close proximity to public transport links and local shops and is a short walk from the centre of Dewsbury with all its amenities. The home has ample communal space where people who receive services are able to spend time, including three lounges and a dining room. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This unannounced inspection took place over a period of approximately two hours. The inspection focussed on fire safety, following a report from the fire service, and included discussions with the manager and deputy manager, and tour of the premises. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 13 People are supported to engage in community and leisure activities appropriate to their needs and aspirations. EVIDENCE: Lifestyle aspirations vary according to the person’s age, culture, experience and interest. Opportunities for personal development and independent living are created, and people at the home access community facilities and leisure activities. It is clear that the staff play a key role in supporting service users to live fulfilling lives outside as well as within the home. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24, 30 The systems and procedures operated by the home, and the work of the staff ensure that the service users live in a homely, comfortable and clean environment. EVIDENCE: There are areas in the home that are showing signs of wear and tear, but some areas have been redecorated, and on the whole facilities are comfortable and homely. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 42 The home is not up to the required standard with regard to fire safety, which compromises the health and safety of both residents and staff. EVIDENCE: An inspection by the fire service was recently undertaken at the home, which identified several Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 recommendations. Some of the recommendations that could have been acted upon immediately, such as the removing of obstructions from a fire exit, had not been addressed.
