Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. This is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the home. Surveys returned to us by people using the service, and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints or allegations. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and any other visits made to the service within the last twelve months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. This was detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. Most of the service users have been living in the home for several years, but have access to sufficient information about the home. When new service users are admitted a structured admission procedure is followed including an needs assessment, risk assessment, and care plan. The AQAA indicates that service users are involved in the writing of their care plans and in what they want to discuss at their reviews. The home has a complaints procedure in place and the manager stated in the AQAA that the staff team respond to complaints positively. Service users and relatives have access to the complaints procedure with contact names and details for information. Staff have safeguarding vulnerable adults training there are currently no referrals to the local authority under POVA procedures. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 There is an ongoing maintenance and refurbishment programme in place. The AQAA indicated that individual en-suite facilities have been upgraded, various areas of the home have been decorated, lighting and external halogen heaters have been provided in the smoking area, and lockable cupboards have been provided in the kitchen for service users who want to take responsibility for their food budget and management of their diet. The AQAA stated that arrangements are in place to meet the health needs of service uses. It also states that arrangements have been made for two service users to self medicate after expressing a wish to do so. There is a well established staff team in place with 1.5 staff vacancies being covered with bank staff. Training records are being maintained by a senior member of staff and mandatory training and NVQ training is ongoing. The home changed from being a nursing home to a care home providing support to people with mental health problems in June 2009. Quality assurance is monitored by weekly service user meetings, one to one key worker meetings, relative meetings, monthly area manager meetings, regulation 26 visits, and feedback surveys. Six service user feedback surveys were returned to the Care Quality Commission with good comments regarding the home and the support provided. The home is well run, and the food is pretty good, I would like to go out more with staff, were some of the comments made. The home continues to inform the Care Quality Commission of any relevant events that have occurred since the last inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. The work well with The Care Quality Commission and have shown that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 26th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
