What the care home does well To make sure the service can meet peoples personal and health care needs these are assessed before coming to live in the home. Records show people are fully involved in the assessment process and have a say in how they are to be cared for an supported. The assessments include risk assessments and care plans telling staff what they must do to minimize any risks to people in the pursuit of living an ordinary lifestyle. Records show people are encouraged and supported to do as much for themselves and to live as independently as possible.On the day of the visit it was noted that the inspector was not able to speak to the people living in the home as they were at work. People are supported and encouraged to use ordinary community based health care and leisure services. The reviews show peoples health care needs are met by local General Practitioners, Dentists ,Opticians and Chiropodists. People are protected by the way their medicines are dealt with as records show there is a medicine administration policy and procedure showing staff how to give medicines safely. People are further protected as staff training records show they are trained in how to give medicines safely. People using the service are protected by the way staff are recruited and selected as records show references, Police and POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adults List) checks are taken up before they are employed. Peoples health safety and well-being is promoted and protected as staff training records show they have Moving and Handling, First Aid, Infection Control, Food Hygiene and Fire Safety training. To make sure peoples needs can be fully met records show staff also have Learning Disability Awareness training that includes Autism Awareness and caring for people who have Epilepsy.People are protected from any kind of abuse as there is a Safeguarding Policy and Procedure provided showing staff what they must do if any allegations of abuse are made. To further protect people records show all staff have Safeguarding training that is updated regularly. The returned satisfaction surveys show people are very happy with the services and support provided. Records show and in particular the minutes of residents meetings, reviews, assessments and care plans show people have the opportunity to comment on the running of the home and have a say in how they live their lives. What the care home could do better: People continue to benefit from living in a well managed home that is run in their best interests, and where they have a say in how they live their daily lives. The home is located within a semi-detached house in a residential area of Pontefract. The home is a few minutes walk from the centre of Pontefract and all local amenities. It is on a main bus route, There are local shops, public houses and clubs close by. Service users are very able and a supported in living as ordinary life as possible. The services users, who are able to communicate the help they require from support workers set the tone of the home. The service users living in the home consider it a home for life and do not anticipate moving elsewhere. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 7 What we found:
This random unannounced visit started at 09.00 and ended at 11.00. During the visit there was the opportunity to speak to the registered manager and owner and people using the service, and some support workers. A sample of peoples records including assessments, care plans, reviews and medical records were seen. Some staff records were also looked at and included, application forms, references, Police and POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adult List) checks and training records. The inspector would like to take the opportunity to thank the registered manager and staff team for their hospitality cooperation throughout this visit. What the care home does well:
