We looked at the care records for the last two people to be admitted to the home. We looked at the records for the last two staff to be employed. We looked at medication, including controlled drugs. We spoke to staff and to people who use the service. We toured the building. We found that people are only admitted to the home on completion of a pre admission assessment which is completed by someone from the home and involves either the person themselves or their representative. We found that care plans are clear, identify people needs and how the support will be provided. We found improvements since the last key inspection, care plans and recording are now more precise about the food and drink that people consume especially if they are nutritionally at risk. We found the communal areas are more stimulating with items for people to pick up and hold and more sensory stimulation for those people who are cared for in bed. We observed lunch and it was relaxed and unhurried with staff engaging people in conversation. We were shown the controlled drugs and medication practice in the home and we were told that senior staff complete a twelve week medication course which is accredited. There are now care plans in place for anyone on as and when or PRN medication. There are now care plans in place for people who have been prescribed creams so that staff know exactly when, why and how the cream is to be applied. We looked at staff files and found the appropriate checks are completed before they start work and an induction takes place so they know what is expected of them. Two or more references are received but they are not always verified. We were told that there is a training plan in place for people. We were told that a deputy manager has been recruited and that since the last inspection there is a new activity co-ordinator. We looked at various areas of the home as a concern had been raised that people were not supported, medication had been found on the floor and that chairs were at times wet. During our visit we found the home smelt fresh and all the bathrooms were clean. We spoke to a senior member of staff about medication practice. We observed staff throughout our visit and they were supportive and prompt to help people.
