Forty-two will have a diagnosis of dementia and the remaining twenty will need general nursing care. The home is set out over three floors. The ground floor is for nursing care and the two upper floors for people with dementia. Each bedroom has its own en-suite toilet and washing facilities. In addition there are several well appointed bathrooms with the most up to date bathing equipment. Other facilities include dining rooms, activity rooms, a hairdressing room and a snoozelen (a specialised relaxation room to help people with dementia). It should be noted that Life Style Care operates a no smoking policy in each of their new homes. This means that people who smoke will only be able to do so outside of the building. This information is included in the Statement of Purpose. Fees payable are between £650 (as a baseline for nursing care) and £680 pounds (for dementia care). We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focusses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information we needed, Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints, What the service has told us about things that have happened to people using the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Evidence from both the previous key inspection and also a random inspection visit that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. What has this told us about the service? We received the completed Annual Quality Assurance Assessment filled in by the manager on the date we asked for it. In it the manager updated us on changes to the service. These include: developing a Guide to living at Avon Lodge in place of the service users guide, recruiting a second co-ordinator to make sure people get good choice and opportunities to take part in meaningful activities, work to make sure peoples end of life care is given greater importance and their wishes fulfilled, planning sessions with staff to help them develop more person-centred care plans for people, plus developing and improving care where possible, after complaints and incidents of abuse are reported. We did a random inspection of the service in September. This was to check care plans, management of complaints and safeguarding adults from abuse. We found that the manager and deputy are clear about promoting good practice and keen to learn from all incidents to improve peoples quality of life and care. From the inspection we were satisfied that the home continues to give good care for people with dementia. We received a few completed Have your Say surveys sent to relatives before writing this report. Comments in the section what does the service do well included: Cares and look after residents and activities are organised to keep most occupied, They are very friendly to the patients, Encourages residents to take part in various activities. Calling in of outside specialist bodies to help deal with some of the issues. Listening to issues of a very delicate situation and checking on progress on a regular basis. Keeping families informed of changes in the centre and forthcoming events at the residents /relatives meeting. Setting up of a support group for relatives, The home is always very clean and the food is very good and: Avon Lodge always tries to achieve high standards of care , hygiene and activities. They do this extremely well. The staff are always very cheerful and will find time to talk about the care being provided for my relative. Two comments were made about what the service could do better: Have more of one to one care for some residents and: Cannot think of anything. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Staff also filled in surveys and commented: In my experience of care homes, few are as dedicated to person-centred care and choice as this one. Where possible service users are given full autonomy and only assisted where they request or absolutely require. Obviously this helps their mobility, independent thought and self-esteem. However, one person stated: On occasions the standard of English of the carers is not good, causing confusion and agitation in the residents. Language training could be offered to competent but linguistically challenged workers. From the AQAA the manager showed a good level of commitment to staff training in all areas including: safeguarding adults from abuse, deprivation of liberty and mental capacity act, continence management and nutrition for older people, among others. Staff have also been given supportive training in how to care for people with dementia. New staff have been taken on and the manager and deputy have worked to make sure the mix of staff skills is right on each floor. We believe all the above shows a continuing commitment by the manager and staff to give good quality care to people with dementia. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by January 2011 or at the frequency as decided by the Care Quality Commission if changes are made to the inspection programme. However, we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service given or the safety of the people living there.
