What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection or Annual service review. We received the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us numerical information about the service. We have received no complaints about the service. We looked at information that the home has sent us about things that happen in the home. These are called notifications and are legal requirement. The home contacts us regulary and there was no cause for concern in the notifications. We reviewed the last key inspection. At this inspection the overall assessment of outcomes for people was excellent and there were no reuirements made. We sent surveys to people who live in the home, to staff and to health and social care professionals. What has this told us about the service? People who returned a survey said that they usually or always received the care and support they needed. They said that staff were usually or always available when they needed them and listened to them and acted on what they said. People received the medical care that they needed and knew someone to speak to informally if they were not happy. People said that the home was fresh and clean and that they usually or always liked the meals. When asked what the home did well people wrote: The staff are very good. There is a lovely atmosphere. One relative wrote: All nursing and care requirements are met to a very high standard. The home is well run and the nursing and care staff are well trained. They are very diligent and efficient. The AQAA states that Care plans are reviewed at regular intervals and service users are encouraged to make their own decisions and control their own lives whilst being supported to be independent. Service users who wish to self medicate are assessed to establish their ability and provided with support and help in order that their independence is maintained where possible. The home benefits from an experienced and established management team. The registered manager Pat Britton has thirty three years nursing experience. She has Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 worked in nursing homes for seventeen years and holds a BSc (Hons) in Gerontological Nursing. There is a commitment to continuous development in the home which is supported by the corporate staff and services of Care South. For example the chef now visits the dining room on a daily basis during lunchtime in order that she is available for any service users who wish to discuss the menus and food provision within the home. Development and changes to menus are discussed at residents and relatives meetings. Menus have been updated taking into consideration quality, presentation and individual choice. The AQAA states that the home continually reviews and develops the programme of activities, in order that service users are able to enjoy a full and stimulating lifestyle. Life history profiles are used to make activities for the individual more meaningful and person-centred. There were comments in one survey returned that people who stayed in their bedrooms would like more one to one time with staff and some individual activities. Corporate Clinical Audits and monitoring visits are regularly carried out as a method of continuous self assessment. The home has a dedicated Health and Safety person who carries out safety checks and completes records. Duty rotas are completed on a weekly basis to ensure that the home has the correct staffing levels which are higher than minimum requirements. Beauchamp House has a dedicated and committed team of staff who work cohesively to provide a high standard of care to service users. Staff who returned surveys said that they were given up to date information about the needs of the people they cared for. They said that they were supported by their manger and knew what to do if they had concerns about the home. There were positive comments from staff about the home. When asked what the home does well one member of staff summed up the strengths: Training is always up to date, catering good, lovely environment , homely feel and team work. Staff felt proud of the standard of care they were able to provide. There was some concern about the size of some bedrooms now that hoists are used more frequently. Beauchamp House is a lovely old country house however some bedrooms are small for the use of hoists. There are major renovations and developments planned at the home. This will include 54 new en-suite bedrooms and associated communal space. It is anticipated that the first phase of the homes refurbishment/extension will be completed within the next twelve months. Meetings have been held with service users and members of Care Souths senior management team. They have taken into account the views of service users in order to ensure that the service and care delivery is not greatly affected whilst this is taking place. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review?
