Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This inspection was undertaken as part of the inspection programme for Beechdale. The inspection focused on the care afforded to service users and to their protection. On the day of this visit, there were five service users accommodated at the home. Two service users had been living at the home for some time as they are awaiting for a more permanent placement to be arranged. The records completed by the home for all service users were found to be extremely well detailed and provided staff with full information about the care required together with details of how this care should be given. Service users who have not stayed at the home previously are fully assessed prior to their first admission to identify their needs and to enable any specific equipment to be made available prior to their admission. Updates of care needs are gathered from families and carers for service users who use the home on a regular basis. Service users, families and carers are involved in the preparation of the care files and some files provide information in pictorial format to assist those who have difficulty with the written word. Care plans are extremely personalised and all risks are clearly identified with appropriate risk management plans to ensure that the service users are protected. Specific dietary needs are detailed in the care plans and this information is also displayed in the kitchen to ensure that dietary and cultural needs are met. Individual preferences are recorded in the care files such as time of rising and going to bed, food likes and dislikes, gender of care giver, and the way that care is provided. Detailed communication information is held in the care files to enable staff to understand body language and actions for service users who are unable to express themselves verbally. Equipment to meet the service users needs is provided by the home or brought in with the service user. All staff are given comprehensive moving and handling training to protect the service users and themselves. Records are held of the actual care given to service users on a daily basis and are comprehensive. Medications entering the home are clearly recorded and checks are made with GPs regarding these where necessary. Some service users administer their own medications following a risk and ability assessment and secure facilities are provided in bedrooms for the storage of these. Staff are given training on medications and their competency to deal with these safely is assessed. All staff are fully vetted prior to commencing work at the home to ensure the protection of service users. A comprehensive training programme is followed by all staff and recent training includes medications, epilepsy, safeguarding and infection control. Additional training including first aid, safe feeding, food hygiene and diabetes have been planned for the very near future. All staff are given training in the protection of vulnerable adults and information is held in the home regarding the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding. Training is also provided when the needs of prospective service users identifies this as necessary. All staff either hold, or are working towards, NVQ qualifications. No complaints have been made to the home or to CQC in the last twelve months. The home has a policy and procedure to be followed in the event of a complaint being made.
