Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection of the service .This included : -The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. -Eight surveys,of 15 sent out, were returned to us by people using the service and/or their relatives. -Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. -What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. -The previous key inspection and the results of of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. -Relevant information from other organisations. This included two survey responses from seven sent to health and care professionals. -What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us most of the information we asked for. We subsequently asked the manager to send us some information about the staffing arrangements which had not been included. The manager said that the home has systems for regular consultation with people receiving a service and others and provided information about changes made based on such consultation such as, easier access to the garden, a covered area of the patio, raised flower beds so that people can do gardening, alterations to the menu and a shower for people with physical disabilities. The manager gave other examples of improvements made to the service including redecoration and maintenance which is ongoing, an increase in activities and stimulation and changes to the assessment process to include requirements of the Mental Capacity Act and to formulate effective care plan packages. We were provided with details of further plans to improve the service including aspects of staff training such as in safeguarding and to meet the diverse needs of people using the service. We were told of plans to provide more activities and work more closely with families. The management stress their willingness to listen and respond to comments made about the service and state that they have not received any complaints about the service since the last inspection in July 2008. The commission has not received any complaints to refer to the service for investigation and no safeguarding issues have been brought to our attention. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 In surveys from people using the service and relatives we were told that they were given enough information before moving in and positive views about the care and support provided were received. One person said I am very happy with my care. Another said the home did everything well. Another said in all aspects the home is run well. People said that the staff usually or always listened and acted on what was said and that they could speak to someone informally if they were not happy. Most were aware of the complaints procedure. We received comments from health/care professionals with mixed views about whether peoples social and health needs are properly monitored, reviewed and met by the care service. One person said that advice could be listened to more than the home currently does and gave examples of how needs could be better met regarding some higher support needs. This information was discussed with the manager who said that the homes policy was to follow such advice, that sometimes advice conflicted and the wishes of the people receiving the service were taken into account. However she agreed to review liaison and documentation. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 15th July 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
