What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 6 surveys (out of 10 sent out) returned to us by people using the service, 8 surveys (out of 10 sent out) returned from staff and 4 surveys (out of 5 sent out) returned to us by social and health care professionals.. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was comprehensive, clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing an excellent service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The home tells us that they encourage all prospective people to visit the home and stay for lunch/tea so they can see what it would be like living there. They also said that everyone has a four to six week settling in period to enable them to make an informed decision as to whether it is the right care centre for them and ensure that the home can meet their needs. As a result of listening to people who use the service the home have built a small garden area to the side of the building, which they plan to lay pebbles so that people can have an area where they can pot there own plants and watch them grow. People living in the home tell us that they always receive the care and support that they need, staff are available when they need them and that the staff listen and act on what they say. When asked what does the home do well, comments include, The staff are nice and friendly and care for my needs. The home is clean and tidy. Nice television. Everything. People tell us that the home make sure that they get the medical care they need. Information from social and health care professionals states that the social and health Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 care needs of people are properly monitored, reviewed and met and that the staff seek advice and act on it to ensure that they improve peoples well-being. When asked what does the service do well, comments include: Provides high standards of care to all patients, staff are well trained to cope with the diverse needs of service users. The home is excellent at identifying any health care problems and reporting to the appropriate health care professional. Provides person centered care and the staff promote choice and autonomy. The staff are skilled in monitoring the clients mental health and they will seek help and advice at an early stage. The manager and staff have formed a good relationship with mental health services. This is an outstanding home with an exceptional leader. They have dealt with some very complex cases with psychiatric and mental health issues. They act in a very caring and professional manner with the clients. The home has a homely atmosphere to their care which I think is admirable. When asked, what could the service do better, comments include: Nothing I cannot identify any deficits. I have no criticisms. Without exception staff tell us that they are trained to do their job, and that they meet with their manager who gives them support and discusses how they are working. When asked what does the home do well, comments include: The home is run extremely well. There are regular outings for people, including coffee mornings. The staff are fully trained, and the residents are always our priority. This is a first class home and I cannot think of anything that could be better. A relative made the comment on one of the surveys, My mother was a resident at Botham Hall for over three and a half years and myself and my family were very happy with her excellent care. The home and the Commission have not received any complaints or concerns in the last twelve months. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Our judgment is that the home is still providing an excellent service. We will do a key inspection by 1st December 2011; however, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
