Annual Service Review Page 3 of 8 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. Information in the AQAA told us where improvements have been made to the service. This includes; - More detailed records are being kept. - A meeting has been held with every individual in the home to establish whether Bridgewood House is still the home of their choice. Questionnaires regarding this have also been sent to individuals families. - Staff have completed training specifically aimed at supporting people with dementia. Some environmental changes have also taken place to help those with dementia. - A greater range of activities is now being offered both in and outside of the home. A designated member of staff is responsible for arranging and coordinating activities. - Improved door holding methods have been introduced to make life easier for people with limited mobility. Some rooms have also been redesigned so that people with Annual Service Review Page 4 of 8 limited mobility have more space. - Protected mealtimes are being introduced. - To ensure that hospital staff are given relevant information to support individuals that are admitted to hospital or attend hospital appointments, the home now liaises with the Learning Disability and Complex Needs Matron. - A new fire alarm system, alarm and call system has been installed to ensure peoples safety. - Medication procedures and paperwork have been improved to ensure the safety of people living at the home. - Additional safeguarding training is now delivered to all staff. - A number of areas of the building have been redecorated and new furnishings, chosen by people living at the home, have been purchased. - The home is no longer used as a contact point for the Bridgewood Trust and this has reduced the number of calls and interruptions to staffs work. - Some staff have completed training specific to the needs of the people living at the home, including, using sensory equipment, dementia, palliative care and pressure care. - The registered manager continues to work towards NVQ level 4 and the Registered Managers Award. The AQAA gives information about staffing at the home. Information we have confirms that staff recruitment is thorough and safe. Training is of a good standard and all staff have completed the expected induction training. This is confirmed in the staff surveys received by the commission. The AQAA describes a range of methods that the home has for obtaining peoples views on the quality of the service, and they have made improvements as a result of listening to what people tell them. The home is good at helping people to maintain links with family and friends and people live active and varied lives enjoying a wide range of community, social and recreational activities. The AQAA confirms that policies and procedures are in place for dealing with complaints and protecting people, and no complaints have been received at the home in the last 12 months. In the past 12 months one safeguarding (adult protection) referrals have been made. Information received by the commission indicates that appropriate action is taken to protect people living at the home. As part of this annual service review, the commission sent surveys to thirty people, and thirteen were returned, including the following: ten people living at the home, eight were returned; ten staff working at the home, three were returned ten to social and healthcare professionals involved with people living at the home, two were returned. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 8 Of the eight people living at the home who completed the survey, all said they were asked if they wanted to move into the home and were given enough information on which to base their decision. All said they could choose how they spend their time, carers listened to what they said and the staff treat them well. Some of the comments made in response to the question what does the home do well? include: - The staff look after me. I like my family to visit and I can see them when I want to. I like to go to day centre. - My mum visits me and staff take her home in the car. Staff take me to the theatre and on holiday. - The staff look after me. The staff help me to clean my room and take me out when I want to go out. - I like the food and my bedroom. All of the people who responded said that there was nothing the home could do better. The three staff who completed the survey said they were given enough information about people so they could meet their needs, and all knew what to do if someone had concerns about the home. All of the surveys indicated that there are enough staff on duty to meet the needs of the people living at the home, and they receive enough support from the manager. Some of the comments made in response to the question what does the home do well? include: - Gives high standards of care. Promotes dignity, choice. treats everyone respectfully. Ensures everyone is safe and well. - Bridgewood House provides well trained staff who promote independence and choice. The home ensures clients health, safety and well-being. - Promotes independence, choice, dignity, individuality. Ensures clients health, safety and well-being. Provides well trained staff, promotes and encourages training relevant to the service and clients. One of the surveys completed by social or healthcare professionals confirm that good arrangements are in place to ensure peoples needs are assessed and the right service is planned for individuals. Concerns raised by a visiting professional about the level of required nursing care and the skills of the staff have been raised by the Commission with the area manager. The Commission is in the process of following this matter up with the provider. Both state that peoples privacy and dignity are respected and wherever possible people are supported to live the life they choose. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since the last key inspection and they have shown that they manage issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 8 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 18 November 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
