The quality rating for this service is 3 star. This means that the people who use this service experience excellent outcomes. The reason for this random inspection was to monitor compliance with the National Minimum Standards in order to ensure people using the service continue to experience excellent outcomes. The homeowners completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) several weeks before this visit. This document is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people who use the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. Eight completed surveys were returned from people using the service and five from members of staff. At the time of this visit sixteen people were living at the home. We looked at care records and spoke to members of staff on duty and people using the service. Discussions also took place with the homeowners regarding issues raised during the inspection. People using the service told us they liked living at Briercliffe Lodge. One person said, We couldnt be better looked after. Another person said, Its very homely, we do exactly as we like. We looked at the care plans of two people using the service. These plans identified the health and personal care needs of each person and provided clear directions for staff to follow to ensure their individual needs were met. Information about the likes and dislikes of each person such as the time they like to get up and go to bed was also included in the care plans. This helps members of staff to care for people in the way they prefer. One care worker said, You treat people as you would want to be treated. Appropriate risk assessments including ones for falls, nutrition and the development of pressure sores were in place. Guidance for staff to follow about how to manage identified risks was also included in the care plans. A written report about the care given to each person using the service was completed during each shift. This ensured that all staff had up to date information about the condition of each person in order to ensure continuity of their care. Care plans and risk assessments were reviewed monthly and updated when the needs of the person changed. There were records of the involvement of GPs and other health care professionals including the chiropodist and district nurse in the care of people using the service. Personal care was carried out in the privacy of the persons own room or the bathroom. Members of staff were observed attending to people in a polite and friendly manner. One person told us that the staff were polite and treated her with respect. Another person said, The staff are lovely, theyre like family. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 Medication was stored correctly and administered by members of staff who had received training in the management of medication. Records for the management of medication were in place. These included a record of medication received into the home and a record of unwanted medication returned to the pharmacist. Accurate record keeping is important because it helps to show medicines are being handled safely. We checked a sample of medication administration records and found that these had been completed correctly. We also checked the amount of medication in stock against the amount administered and found this to be correct. This confirms that people have been receiving their medication as prescribed by the doctor. Directions for staff to follow about when people needed their medication prescribed to be taken when required was included in their individual care plans. This ensures that people are given their medication when they need it. We looked at the records of how medication was checked by the homeowners. This was done regularly and involved checking peoples individual medication administration records. They were advised to further develop this system to include an audit of the amount of medication in stock and staff competence. The homeowners told us in the AQAA that people living at the home had been given a copy of the complaints procedure. Surveys completed by people using the service stated that they knew who to speak to if they were unhappy about anything. The homeowners said that people were also given the opportunity to talk about any concerns they may have at their monthly meetings. The homeowners told us that they had investigated two complaints recently. Written records of these complaints confirmed that they had been investigated properly and resolved to the satisfaction of the complainants. The members of staff who completed the survey indicated that they knew what to do if someone expressed any concerns to them. The homeowners told us in the AQAA that appropriate policies and procedures for safeguarding vulnerable adults were in place. Discussion with four members of staff confirmed that they had received training. They also said they would report any concerns immediately and knew the procedure they must follow. The staff who completed the survey stated that two written references and a Criminal Records Bureau check had been obtained before they had started working at the home. These checks ensure people who use the service are protected from the employment of unsuitable staff. What the care home does well:
