Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? This Annual Service Review took place on 14th October 2009. We last undertook a review of this service on 30th September 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys were sent out to people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information was also looked at about how the service has managed any complaints. The service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report also gave us some information on how this service was progressing. What has this told us about the service? We were sent an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) by the service that told us about how the service was progressing and what changes had been made to improve the service for the people who live there. The service has improved environmentally since our last key inspection. Several areas of the home have been redecorated and new flooring has been fitted in the bathroom areas. New bed side tables have been purchased and double glazed units have been replaced. New mattresses and equipment has been purchased for anyone who may be admitted who needs pressure area care. The service plans to build a new gazebo in the garden for the use of the residents when the weather is good. A new extension to the building is planned primarily to improve storage areas within the home. This problem was identified during our last key inspection. The care staff receive appropriate and regular training to help ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to undertake their roles successfully. All new carers go through an induction process prior to starting work. Most of the care staff have a nationally recognised qualification in care (National Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3). This means that they have increased their knowledge and skills to undertake their duties more successfully. There has also been training for the care staff in safeguarding issues and core safety areas such as moving and handling, food hygiene and infection control. A number of trained nurses are employed by the service and the manager told us via the AQAA that nursing support is continuously available to ensure that the people who use the service are well supported and cared for properly. The manager also demonstrated that she had a good knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and was ensuring that training would be available for all of the care staff from a Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 recognised external trainer. Relevant aspects of this act have been included in the care plans for each resident. In general, the care planning system has been improved and updated to reflect a more person-centered approach. There are regular meetings with residents and their families/ advocates as part of the care planning process and reviews take place monthly. We were told, via the AQAA that the service has a regular programme of activity for all residents. Professional entertainers visit the home frequently. Arts and crafts sessions are held and music and movement is popular, to help joints and mobility. Specialist activities are provided for those who have dementia. There are regular trips out to a local hotel that provides lunch and entertainment. We sent out surveys to the care staff who work at Cleveleys Nursing Home. Two of these were returned to us. It was generally felt that staff were supported and trained well by the service and that staffing levels were good, meaning that the residents received more individual support. One survey told us, The training is good and we care for people well, like we should do. Two complaints have been made about the service since our last inspection activity. We have found that the manager deals with complaints properly and professionally under the homes complaints procedure. Overall, we find this service continues to develop, and positive outcomes are provided for the people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor any information we receive about this service. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
