What the care home does well The home has made a number of changes to the environment to help improve the lives of people who use the service and these include, a new kitchen area that has meant more space in the dining room and better facilities. Seven rooms now have en-suite facilities and six of these have a shower. The home now has a shared room for couples or people who request to share. A new medication/treatment room where people can see health care professionals if they do not wish to use their own room. The room also has an air conditioning unit to make sure medications are stored at the temperature recommended by the manufacturers. The downstairs shower room is having a toilet fitted to provide more disabled facilities for people. The laundry room has been upgraded and staff are able to undertake the ironing in this room instead of having to carry it to another room. The home has a designated smoking area outside and now inside for people who wish to smoke. The home has increased their communal space. The home has obtained a grant to level the outside garden space at the rear of the property to make it secure so that people are able to go outside safely. Further planned improvements are to include a new drive way up to the rear door of the home and a ramp will be fitted where there are steps to make it easier for people to get in and out of the home. The home has updated their Statement of Purpose with changes to the environment. What the care home could do better: Whilst building work is taking place and contractors are in the home it is advisable that notices are displayed around the environment to inform people and visitors. The purpose of this visit was to follow up on some concerns we (The Commission) received regarding the changes to the environment the home is in the process of making. A tour of parts the home took place to view the environmental changes. These include adding en-suites facilities to seven rooms belonging to people and six of these will have a shower. The old staff room/ironing room has been made into a double room and a married couple are sharing this. One of the communal lounges that was used as a smoking room has been made into an office. The Responsible Individual said that the home have made other arrangements by adding an external enclosed smoking area and immediately following this visit the home has converted another room in the home to become a smoking room. The home needed to make sure they have not reduced the amount of communal space by turning one of the communal lounges into an office. Following this visit the home sent to us the measurements of their communal space and they now have more communal space for people.
