What the care home does well Each person living at the home has their own care plan and record of their care. This is based around the organisations assessment and care planning documentation. The record we looked at showed that a full assessment and introductory process had been completed before the person moved in. This included visits to the home to meet people and make sure it was the right place for the person to live. However people living at the home have lived together for some years. All four people who returned our surveys told us that they had been involved in the decision to move into Duchy Avenue and had been provided with enough information to help them make that decision. We looked at people`s care records which showed that people take part in lots of different activities and events. People enjoy activities such as going to disco`s,bingo, country music night, hyper club. People have been on holiday to the Lake District and Blackpool and enjoy Turkey and Tinsel holidays in November early December. People living at the home are currently looking at brochures to see where they may want to go on holiday this year. People also have various employment such as delivering newspapers, working in a pub or Horticap. Some people regularly attend church and luncheon clubs. The care record we looked at also showed that people have involvement from other health professionals, such as their dentist, optician and doctors. The medication storage arrangements and recording we looked at showed us that medication is being managed safely by the home. There had been no recent complaints or safeguarding incidents at the home. Staff we spoke to had received safeguarding training and knew how to report any concerns. All four people who live at the home and returned a survey said there was someone they could speak to if they were unhappy and said that they knew how to make a formal complaint. People we spoke to during our visit also told us that their staff were approachable and they could raise any problems if they needed to. All four people who returned surveys told us that the home is `always` kept fresh and clean. During our visit it was clean and tidy and provided people with a homely and comfortable place to live. Some people showed us their bedrooms, which were individually decorated and nice places for them to spend time in.People who were spoken to on the day of the site visit made positive comments such as "It`s all right living here". "They look after us well." "Staff are good." "Food is good." Surveys returned from people living at the home also made positive comments such as "Staff are all right" "I like the staff and manager. I like it better than where I lived before." "It is nice." Four surveys were returned by staff who work at the home. When asked what does the home do well? They made the following comments: "Find ways to meet individual needs. Respect for individuals. Person centered support". "Individuals who live here feel valued. The home makes it possible for them to maintain as much independence as possible. Staff build good relationships with them and supports them to be included in activities that makes their lives interesting. They feel part of the community." "Works as part of a team. Supports individuals to live an independent life." "Individuals are shown their right of dignity, respect and citizenship at all times. Individuals are supported to live in the real world. Individuals make a contribution to their community." When asked what the home could do better? They said, "I believe there are a few areas of improvements, though we continue to look for ways to improve the lives of individuals." "There is always room for improvement." "We always look for new ways, working to improve individual`s lives." "As a leading provider of social care support our vision is of a society where all vulnerable and disabled people have the same opportunities, sense of belonging and are able to discover, their potential and live their lives as they wish within their community and society. This was an unannounced inspection of the care home at 13 Duchy Avenue. The visit was completed on 21st April 2010 by one inspector. The homes staff and the people living there did not know that we were going to visit on this day. During our visit we looked at a selection of records, looked round some parts of the building and talked to some of the people who live at the home and the staff who work there. Before our visit we looked at all of the information we had about the service and asked the home to complete an annual quality assurance assessment. This is a self-assessment that tells us about the home. We also sent out surveys to people who live and work at the home. Four people who live at the home and four staff completed and returned surveys to us. We used all of this information to plan our inspection visit and have included it in this report where appropriate. What the care home does well:
