Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last inspection of Dungate Manor took place on 21st October 2008. This Annual Service Review was completed on 1st September 2009. The AQAA (Annual Quality Assurance Assessment Document) for the service was returned within the given timescale. It was completed by the operations manager, the home does not currently have a registered manager an acting manager is in post at present. The AQAA tells us that the home continues to offer both full time and respite care and the needs of prospective residents are assessed before they are admitted. It says that over the past year care plans have been updated and there is a new keyworking system in place. It states that the service intends to involve staff more in care planning and that when compiling care plans equality and diversity issues are taken into account. The privacy and dignity of residents is respected and the AQAA says that the home communicates any changes in care or health needs to relatives promptly. The AQAA says that medication storage and procedures have improved and the need for further improvements are identified, such as further medication training. It tells us that residents are encouraged to maintain as much independence as possible and their health is monitored, good contacts are maintained with health professionals, areas for improvement such as the need for more detailed recording of personal care provided and training for staff are identified. The AQAA says that residents make choices about their daily lives and activities. The home offers activities such as quizzes, painting and musical exercise. It says meals are varied and an improvement plan sent in by the home in response to requirements made as a result of the previous inspection stated that the home had made menus more accessible. The AQAA adds that residents have been consulted about menus and a Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 new dietary profile is in place.Over the past year there have been more opportunities for residents to offer their views on the home including their preferences for activities.Information in the AQAA is that the home intends to extend the activities programme and offer more suitable activities for people who have dementia. Some of the surveys sent in by service users, staff and relatives refer to the need for more activities and outings. The home has a complaints procedure, the AQAA says it is clearly displayed, one complaint has been made in the last year that has been dealt with according to procedures. There have been two safeguarding vulnerable adults alerts made since the last inspection, one was raised by the home in July 2009 and both remain open at the time of writing. The initial concern raised by the service alert highlighted issues around the need for the home to improve awareness of the safeguarding procedures,it is putting measures in place to address this including additional staff training and better access to information for staff. The last inspection identified that the home was rather tired looking and in need of redecoration and refurbishment in some areas. The AQAA tells us that the windows in the dining room and some bedrooms are now replaced and there are some new carpets and curtains. There are plans for more refurbishment such as the replacement of window frames and bedroom carpets and furniture. Some more garden furniture has been purchased. The AQAA states that the home has a comprehensive staff training programme,it was recruiting more staff and the current staff team is diverse. There has been an increase in the number of staff who have gained an NVQ in care at level two or above and the AQAA states it is working towards having more NVQ trained staff. Comments on surveys from relatives included Staff are attentive and caring The home provides extremely caring carers and Good communication between staff and relatives. The home is currently not full, staffing is arranged according to occupancy numbers, the AQAA says recruitment is taking place for more staff and the AQAA tells us that there has been more training taking place. The home undertakes internal quality assurance and the AQAA tells us that regular residents and relatives meetings are held, there is a suggestion box and residents and other stakeholders are surveyed annually. An improvement plan was submitted following the last key inspection. The outcome of the last inspection was that the service was rated as good.Comments on surveys sent out for the purposes of gaining feedback for this Annual Service review were mainly positive about the home, the main issue raised being the need for more activities to be provided. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will undertake a key inspection by 21st October 2010.
