7 7Elland Road is in Churwell near Morley, Leeds. It is on a main bus route and has good access to local shops, including the White Rose centre and Morley shopping centre. The home provides 24 hour care to seven younger adults with a learning disability, some of whom also have a physical disability. The home has a dining room and two lounges. One lounge is spacious and used regularly and the other is a smaller, quiet area. The kitchen is domestic in character, although access for people who use the service is limited. Six bedrooms have en-suite facilities and are on the ground floor, one bedroom is on the first floor with easy access to a bathroom and toilet. There are three bathrooms, two of which have assisted baths. The fees are reviewed annually in April of each year. The service should be conracted directly for up to date information about charges.

What the care home does well The staff team makes sure that people with different abilities get the same chance to do things as everyone else. They make sure that if people have chosen to do something then they can do it safely. People have good support plans, which tell the staff what help each person needs and what they want to do. The staff get very good training, which helps them to support people in the right way. People and their relatives told us that staff support them very well. Relatives spoken with said they felt listened to and could make suggestions for changes or improvements to the home. They also said that the people living in the home were happy with their lifestyle at the home. They said people enjoy their independence and like to be able to please themselves in what activities they do. Staff have good knowledge of people`s personal support needs. Staff were thoughtful, discreet and respectful of people`s dignity when attending to any needs. It was clear that people who live at the home and staff get on well. The house has all the equipment that people need to make living at the home enjoyable. The home is clean and there are no unpleasant odours. The manager and her staff are approachable and understand the importance of promoting people`s privacy and choice. What the care home could do better: This is what was written in the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment about planned improvements for the next twelve months: "To recognise and acknowledge each person`s abilities, interests, preferences, ensuring effective support is provided to take the person through their transitional stages of their lives. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Key inspection of 24th April 2007. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment form that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. This was an unannounced visit to the home by one inspector on 15th April 2010 who was at the home from 10:30 until 13:30. During the visit we talked to people living in the home, visiting relatives, staff and the manager. We also looked round the building and looked at written records. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at support plans and daily records, peoples meeting minutes, staff rotas and menus. We observed preparations for lunch meal. We had discussions with support staff and relatives who had come for the relatives meeting. Each person has their own personal detailed timetable which reflects their chosen activities in both home and out in the community. Activities ranged from cricket at headingly, outings to the local pub, walks, drives, using the local shops and the park. The home ensure people living there are weighed regularly as part of the health-care monitoring system. In the surveys returned people said they care for all educational, social and everyday needs. Give me support and I am very pleased with the care given. Medication and medication records were looked at and the amount of medication and the records corresponded. Medication storage was looked at and the medication was well organised. A quick tour of the building was carried out. The home was found to be clean and tidy and generally there were no odours. The home ensure all maintenance checks are undertaken and accompanied with appropriate certificates. Although the manager has only been in post a few months relatives and staff were very Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 complimentary about her. Staff and relatives spoken with thought the home was well managed. The manager is going through the registered process with the Care Quality Commission.
