What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at information that we have received and requested since the last Annual Service Review. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home and was completed and returned to the Care Quality Commission in a timely fashion. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. The service makes contact with the CQC if they have any concerns or wish to share information. What has this told us about the service? The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was completed to a high standard giving clear details about the homes achievements in the past year and their plans for the future. The AQAA demonstrates that the home has systems in place to seek the views of people who live at the home and other interested parties. Some changes, including arranging for book and clothing companies to come to the home and regular meetings with the cook, have been put in place as a result of listening to the people who live at the home. The home states that they continue to hold meetings with residents and their representatives to ensure that they are able to influence the running of the home. The AQAA demonstrates how they ensure that they are able to meet the needs of new people moving in. They carry out full assessments of anyone wishing to move in and make sure that they have specialist equipment in place prior to them taking up residence. Everyone living at the home has a personalised care plan that is regularly reviewed to ensure that the home continues to meet individual needs. Information included in the AQAA demonstrates that all equipment has been serviced to ensure the safety of people living and working at the home. Policies and procedures in the home have all been reviewed this year to ensure that they reflect current legislation and good practise guidelines. Some registered nurses have received specialist training to ensure that practise in the home is kept up to date. Training has included; tissue viability, nutrition and health, dementia and palliative care. Plans for the future include more specialist training and more regular meetings for trained staff. According to figures given, 80 of care staff have either obtained, or are working towards, a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in care at level 2 or above. To ensure that medication policies and practises are safe the AQAA states that 6 monthly medication audits are carried out by the local pharmacy and qualified nurses have undertaken a medication management course with the pharmacy. The home informs CQC of all significant events in the home and since the last inspection we have Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 been informed of three drug errors in the home. Documentation received shows that appropriate action was taken to ensure the health and safety of the people concerned. The home has a clear complaints procedure which is available in a number of formats. One complaint has been made in the last twelve months. This was investigated by the home and found to be unsubstantiated. All information received since the last inspection gives evidence that the home continues to provide a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 16th July 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
