Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? We completed a Key Inspection Visit for the home on 2 December 2008 when the home was rated as a 2 Star (good) service. The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. In the last 12 months the service has reviewed the home menus and introduced extra choices, in response to peoples requests for change. Activities within the home have improved as a result of listening to peoples views on what they would like and the times during the week they would like to do activities. The service has created a new gardening facility and a larger greenhouse so people can enjoy outside activities. New DVDs and CDs have been bought so the service can create cinema nights for people living in the home. Improvements to bathing and toilet facilities have been made in the last 12 months. An existing bathroom has been renovated and an Arjo bath installed, and a large disabled access toilet created with specialist flooring to ensure people can manage safely or be supported by the staff. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received five surveys back from people using the service (some had help from their relatives in completing the questionnaire), and four surveys back from staff. Staff members told us that their induction and training is satisfactory and that they felt they had the skills and experience to meet the needs of people living in the home. Some people and staff felt that staffing levels could be better, especially during busy times of the day. This is being monitored by the manager and adjusted to meet the changing needs of people using the service. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there. People commented that they get the care and support they require and are able to make decisions about what they do each day. Individuals commented that there is a good choice of food on the menu, the staff are friendly and helpful and there is good communication with families and the home is bright and clean. We have not had any formal complaints reported to us in the past 12 months and people using the service have told us that they understand the complaints procedure and are confident of using it if necessary. There has been one safeguarding of adults referral made in the past 12 months. This was around one person being inappropriately placed and their behaviour was causing problems for others in the home. This was investigated by the local authority safeguarding team, and the individual was reassessed and moved from the home. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect all care services at least once every 3 years. The completion of this Annual Service Review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service, therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 1 December 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
