Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or have asked for, since the last key inspection, which took place on 13 November 2007. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Ten completed surveys, returned to us by people using the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened there. The previous Annual Service Review, which was completed on 30 September 2008. As well as the above information we completed a risk assessment of the service to ensure we had enough information about the service to determine the quality rating had not changed in the past 12 months. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear, and gave us most of the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA, and after speaking to the co-owner, our judgement is that The Gravers is still providing a good service for people. We spoke to the co-owner of the home, to check on what they had done about two requirements and some recommendations made at the last key inspection for the service. The response reassured us that all areas have been addressed. The service did not tell us in the AQAA about any specific improvements they have made there in the last twelve months. However, it does tell us that people are encouraged to make decisions and choices, and that the management and staff will always try to facilitate these. And when the service tells us about what they do well, they demonstrate that people are offered a range of activities to make their lifestyle interesting and varied. Care is also taken to make sure the environment in which people live is safe, and that they are supported by staff who are suitably recruited and trained. We received ten completed surveys from people who live at The Gravers. They made positive comments about the home. When asked what the home does well, they said things like Probably just about everything, The home is excellent, Runs good outings for the residents, My bedroom is lovely, Good all round, They keep me safe and sound and It helps you with your problems. When asked what the home could do better, we received only two comments, which were Probably nothing, and I am satisfied with the home. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 All agreed that they were asked if they wanted to move to The Gravers, that they know who to speak to if they are not happy, and that the care staff and manager treats them well. When asked if the care staff and manager listen and act on what they say, nine out of ten answered always or usually, with the tenth answering sometimes. However, the majority agreed that they can do what they want during the day, on an evening, and at night, and knew how to make a formal complaint. Neither the commission nor the service has received any complaints in the last twelve months. The home told us in the AQAA that there had been two admissions to accident and emergency from the home in the last year. We had not been informed about these, and have reminded the co-owner to make sure that staff notify us of such incidents. This is so we have all the information we need about things that have happened there, to confirm that such incidents have been well managed. She has given her assurance that this will be done in the future. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our statutory responsibility to inspect all care services at least once every 3 years. The completion of the risk assessment and Annual Service review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 12 November 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service, or the safety of the people using the service.
